Just bought me one of these reels for surfcasting. Are there any easy upgrades I should do? This is my first larger casting reel I have used from the beach, have tossed others from boats but thats different. It seems to cast ok right out of the box. I am throwing it on a Tica 11ft 3-8oz rod and have it spooled with 20lb Suffix. Maybe some good oil on the bearings?

Other than making sure the red brakes are in it, I wouldn't touch it, not even the oil. They are great reels, specially if you have big hands.

Thanks OMB, the red brakes are not in it.

Hey ketch, I had the exact questions when I got my first Slosh awhile back, and here a few weeks ago, I put the red brakes in. You have to take off the left sideplate to get in there where the brakes go. I'm really looking forward to breaking this thing in here in a couple of weeks. I've heard great things about them! :)

I agree with the advice of putting the red brakes on. I fished mine without for two seasons and while it was manageable, I did have my share of fluffs and at least 1 blow up per outing. This year put the brakes on and it is a new real and casting is effortless with no fluffs!

I can't wait to throw it with the brakes in. I did have a few fluffs the other day. Thinking about buying a 20 also.

Wheels reels has a adjustable magnetic side plate if you want more control.
I believe there is one in the market place if you want to see what it looks like..

Hey all, Ima 2yr newbie to the sport. I have the sha 20 on my 13'breakaway hdx, love it as is. How exactly does adding the brakes effect long casting.

Dean if you bought the reel new the red breaks should be in the bag with another different color set of brakes. The brakes are a must especially if you are new to surf casting.

With my Tica 11 ft. 3-8 oz. I use30 SHA spooled with 17 # Suffix and switch out with a 20 SHA spooled with 14# Suffix . This set up works well for me. Also use same Tica length rod with Baitrunner and 15# line.

Casting in the fields is a lot different than casting into the ocean. With the wind blowing in your face, you better have red brakes in if you don't want a big birds nest when others are catching fish. Been there, done that to many times.

Long story short, when you have the proper brakes in according to your skill level, it helps to keep the reel under control throughout the cast. When the reel would start to fluff up and possibly cause problems by blowing up, the brakes will slow the spool down just enough to keep that from happening. Now, mechanical brakes, like the ones they are talking about (different color blocks) do offer breaking throughout the ENTIRE cast, you can loosen your reel up a little to compensate for that. That loosening up will generally allow you to cast further without the concern of a blow up. Of course, that is the condensed version just to give you an idea of what is going on.

Made a few casts today with the red brakes in the reel. I did notice a little less fluff but it also seems to have cut down on distance. I think I'm gonna fish the reel with no brakes but keep the m close by in case the wind kicks up.

the pessimist complains about the wind. the optimist expects the wind to change. the realist keeps the red brakes handy.
use thicker oil in the small spool bearing.
thinner oil in the bigger bearing.
red blocks. go have fun.

I'm throwing 20 pound Suffix on it now. What can I expect if I drop to 17 or even 14? Will I get enough out of it to sacrifice the fish fighting ability of the 20 pound line?
