Hey I am trying to fly to seatle in August to visit my Brother. Anyway I have a few rods I want to bring and I was wondering if anyone has travelled with rods lately with the new charges for checked items. I am trying to figure out if it will be cheaper to just ship them to my brother and then ship them back. The longest rod section is just over 5 feet so it will already be pushing the limits on what the will even take on the plane. Anyway thanks for your help.

every airline is different, but i've recently flown with a rod case that was right at five feet and checked it as carry-on with no problems.
if your willing travel with it as checked baggage then i seriously doubt they will charge you for the extra bag.
i don't want to get you into trouble, but what i usually do is just carry the case on the plane with me and set it in one of the closets because it wont go in the overhead. when you check in just kinda keep the case out of sight so the person at the check in counter doesn't even see it.
i've found that once you get past the check in counter the rest is easy.

Narfpoint, If I were you I would ship my rods ahead of time, then ship them back.

yep I just checked and the airline I am taking has it posted that long items have an extra charge of $39 and it doesnt even say if that is on top of the $15 the charge to check a bag. So does any have a favorite shipping company the have for shiping rods across the country for cheap.

I usually just FEDEX it, however I would shop around.
ups or fedex ground. if you want to save.
express it if you really need too.
USPS is even cheaper and faster then ground.
but has pitiful tracking. also a slight higher chance of package loss..
BUT you can always insure it for cheap.
