For those who fish for cobia from a pier, do you use a pinrig, throw bucktail with curly tails, or use a bottom rig w bait?

How would you fish a live eel?

You fish a king ring or pin rig with a big bluefish, a slow one you know, closer to the pier than the other fisherman. That's the best way that you would have a chance to hook up with one.

Caught a 48 incher off Sunglow about two years ago...maybe 30 yards off the side, carolina rig with a dead finger mullet. He was right under some big rays. Watch for the rays and the cobia follow under them normally.

The way that folks fish an eel in Florida is sight fishing. They keep a rod ready with an eel in an aerated bucket in the hopes that one shows up and it is just a cast away.

They also fish live baits of all sorts the same way. Yeah, big Buck Tails with a grub tails works. You can also catch them on the bottom with live or dead bait or fake bait.

Cobia like only five kinds of bait but they really like those 5!

Big ones, Little ones, Live ones, Dead ones and Fake ones.

The pier you plan on fishing from has a lot to do with what works best. Maybe with a little more info on where you plan to fish will get you a little better help.

Sight fishing is the norm in the Gulf, pin rigging or fishfinder rigs seem to be standard on the Atlantic.

On a pier, I usually use a slide rig. Sling 6-8oz, then using a snap swivel clip the leader and bait to the line, allowing my bait to run from the surface to the bottom where ever the bait wants to go. Not saying its the best way, just the way I do it.

I fish piers in NC mostly.... all along the outer banks....mostly on HI..

I've seen cobia hit king rigs, and baits from the beach..... I've also seen several folks with king rigs out that keep a medium to heavy rod handy with a bucktail and curly tail attached for sight casting, but I've never seen anyone actually cast at them or towards some rays hjoping for some cobia underneath. With all the beach closures on HI, I was thinking my best bet is a pier as I don't own a boat...
