Looking for some suggestions for rod / reel setups for a first timer. Have fished the surf with my 9' salmon spinning rod setup with 14lb. test. Looking to upgrade without a huge investment. Thinking about
Cabela's Salt Striker™ Cork Tape Handle Spinning Surf Rods Item:IK-122623, any thoughts. Also, I have an old Penn Spinning reel (not sure of model#) to match it up with, but other reel suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Depends on what kind of budget you have, where you are fishing (surf, pier, intercoastal?) and what you are fishing for. If you can take a pic of the Penn reel, I'm sure that either I or someone else on here can identify it for you. Is it Black or Green? (or some other color?)

I actually lent the reel to a friend of mine who was heading to Cape May for stripers, otherwise I could find out what model it is. It's a large (7" or 8"), black metal, open face spinning reel with I believe a gold spool. It's very heavy and holds a significant amount of 20 lb test line. I got it for muskie fishing but it's way to heavy to heave plugs all day. It was given to me by another friend's father who I believe use to work at a Penn reel factory in Hegins,Pa. I need a good starter setup for fishing the surf in Assateague a couple times a year and Ocracoke. I'm leaning towards a Penn Captiva CV2 Combo 9CV80102H PEN-0789 CV28000 275yds/20lb CV2102H 10'0'' 15-30lb.

Even though they have supposedly been "Improved", I would stay away from the Captiva. Take a look at the Daiwa BG (Black Gold), Cabela's "Salt Striker "Metal" (Same as Pfleuger "Metalist" only less money) or, check the Marketplace on here. I know ooeric listed his Abu 807i and 806i on there, and I can tell you for a fact that it's a great reel. ledweightII's suggestion above also sounds like a darn good deal.
