Hi guys, I found the abu casting reels are insteresting. I dont know much about them but i see most of them with levelwind? Is there ones without the levelwind? Is it ok to remove the levelwind and cross bar to make it an open face reel?
And which one do you use? Would you trade it for anything else?
Thanks,
JT.

Welcome to the world of ABU lovers. They're great casting reels and real eye candy too! Abu makes something called the CT model without the levelwind. You can remove the level wind and go without it but better to just buy a CT model.

Hey J.T.
Abu does make one with out the levelwind, look for the designation "CT" in the model number (such as the C3 CT mag elite). Most of the CT's were not intended for the U.S. market and sold here by resellers and people that bought them from the U.K.
There are conversion kits, to convert any Ambassador reel to a CT. Simply removing the levelwind and leaving a hole there is not recommended. The conversion is cheap and as simple to install as the levelwind is to remove (I guess it would be easier in fact).
THere are also "cages" that you can buy, most notably from QTC that will not only convert your Abu to a CT but provide much more stability against torque since they are machined out of billet aluminum (or magnesium in the case of the Zeeta cages).
The beauty of the Abu Ambassador is that is completely modifiable to your hart's content.

The Level wind is easaly removed and replaced with a Conversion bar. Alot less than a CT Cage. Will serve the same purpose. Here is a link to a fellow that can help with anything you may need.

I would just buy a stock abu garcia ct frame, they are pretty available and you dont have to chop your reel.

thanks for the info guys. I think i have to take cautious steps here. Dont wanna get hooked without knowing and ended up buying many many abus plus the cost of "ABUrette patch" to slow down.

Don't worry, Abus hold their resale value well. Just keep them in good shape and keep the box/tools, and you'll easily get back nearly what you paid for them. I know this from experience! ;):p:D

so what is the best abu for the $$. I have saltist 50 and i really like it. Got it for 80$, used. It casts better than expected and solid like a tank. Is there an Abu with similar capability?
