Does one always bet the river? That's what I've been told.

ALWAYS bet the river? Man, just THINK about it for a minute. Of course not.

Depending on what you have, how many players are still in, the size of the pot, how the previous bets have gone down, etc., you might bet low, bet high, check, check-raise, or fold.

If your playing all the way to the river,I've been told you should have something worth betting. In most cases. Unless your going for the check-raise,then you might lose money and get folded to............So I've heard.

Or maybe your bluffing, and feel you've got caught then fold.

One school of thought which makes a lot of sense is to use a "mixed strategy." The point here is to not act predictably so that how you bet signals to smart players what you have. Smart players quickly detect betting patterns in novices and that's how they take you down so easily.

If you always bet the river, then you will always be called by somebody. In a 6 person game (or even 5,4 or 3) or higher, the odds dictate that more often than not, you would be going against a higher hand the majority of the time.

Iv always found that in a home game, certain players will chase all day and call you no matter what, and some players are about as tight as possible. You have to bet accordingly and not overthink. The pros have a strategy because they are ALL sophisticated. You could be the worlds greatest poker player, but if you are going against 3 guys who dont care about strategy, odds, etc, then you have to dumb down your approach.

hey jhmorgan, they might all fold, so no, THAT's not right.

"Always bet the river"
"If you always bet the river, then you will always be called by somebody"

Do you guys need to look up "always" in the dictionary? Or just THINK before you speak/type???

Never use absolutes. Thanks, learned it in the 3rd grade probably. I said always almost tongue-in-cheek (Kinda like saying "never use absolutes". Get it? Never is an absolute). If youll notice, I then said "more often than not."

Do you ALWAYS (see I can type one word in caps too) get bent out of shape over a post in the Lounge? Or is this a ONCE in a blue moon type thing?

May have been me. What site were you on? I used to play fairly often on the internet, but not any more. I'm always up for a home game though!! If anybody ever has an empty seat at their home game, let me know.;):D
