Old Reel ID?

I have an old Penn reel, looks a little light for big game fishing but I assume that's what it was used for because it has a heavy-duty rod clamp. Anyway, the sideplate reads "Penn Peer". Anyone know how well this type of reel worked or any other info about it?

Your Reel should have a model number on the side plate.

It's either a 109, 209 or 309. The 209 is probably the most common size.

This family of Penn Reels was "Spawned" from the original "Penn Peerless #9."

They've been around for 60 years, and there are still thousands and thousands of them in everyday service.

It's not a "rare" or particularly "valuable" reel. but it IS an excelent example, of the type of reel that GrandPa used back in the "Glory Days."

I still have several 209's and 309's spooled with "Green Spot" braided Dacron line and mounted on "Split Cane" Trolling Rods.

I try to take them out once or twice a year, and catch a fish or two on them.

It helps Me keep a proper perspective, on what fishing is really about.
