Has there been a discussion on the destruction of trawlers (http://www.popsci.com/popsci/science/article/0,12543,562821,00.html) on this board yet?

"A bottom trawler drags a 200-foot-long net...Just 16 percent to 72 percent of the catch consists of desired fish; the rest...suffocates and is discarded"
Unbelieveable.
And the worst thing is that they know what they're doing and how much it hurts the ecosystem :( .
I agree, this needs to be stopped somehow

But how? I think that commercial fishermen deserve to make a living... but not at the price of future catches. How do we get the guys we PAY to represent us acknowledge the threat to the fishereys(sp) and recognize that the problem is solveable but might be painful? My wife and I belong to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Sierra club (, I don't really like the Sierra Club.. but they do have a powerful lobby that tends in my direction) but NOT peta! We, as pier and surf fishermen ,do NOT have the economic fire power to compete with the commercial fishermen's lobby. We need to do something about this. It might just be time for the CCA and Save the Bay and whatever other organizasion are out there to get together and combine thier finacial power and make a difference. It might also be time for this board to GET A SPELL CHECK SO I DON'T LOOK LIKE A MORON!
Tank u all so vry much!!!!
