hey, is there any truth that fish can hear/feel vibrations from the beach in the water. so for instance, if i am swearing like a sailor while undoing a birds' nest in my fishing reel are the fish offended by my use of profanity and go foraging somewhere else? no really, if i am pounding a sand spike into the sand with a rubber mallet (or with a warrior) will that disturb the fish?

It is true that fishes senses are better than ours are but do vibrations scare away fish? Last time I was at SPSP, I banged in 3 sand spikes with a rubber mallet and caught fish right away. If vibrations scared away fish, then they should be able to sense every time anyone or anything walks on the beach. I do feel that loud music can scare away fish but have not been able to prove it yet.

(And the only thing pounding is going to be the remedial teams head after we whip em all over the place)

anthony, did you catch a striper or a croaker. the reason i ask is i am thinking [as dangerous a that is] that maybe a predator fish is less likely to be spooked by noise/vibration than say prey. having said that it appears from your experience there is evidence to suggest the fish may in fact be attracted to the vibration in the water, like a shark.

I don't think vibrations scare away fish. Here's why: during a spot run on the pier, there are people running up and down the pier, yelling, flopping rigs around, etc. and people still mamge to catch fish (predetors and prey). And wood carries vibrations easier than sand. So I think the answer in no.

maybe, but I would not think so in the bay or ocean. I have spooked trout before walking across rocks near a hole where the water is still. But the bay and ocean have so much natural noise I'm unsure the fish can tell the difference. One spearfishing technique I use while tanking is to sit on the bottom, pick up a couple rocks and bang them together. The fish come to see what the noise is. They never get close enough to shot but then you start a cat and mouse game until you can get a shot. Maybe pounding in the spike could actural attract the fish.

It was earlier this year and I was catching stripers. Plus as far as you guys cast, you're probably scaring them away to your range so no one else can catch them :D.

i wouldn't worry about vibrations for fish in anything other than a small pond or when bowfishing. If you think about all the boat traffic and weather related vibrations/noise the fish deal with, they are more than likely used to some noise. Not saying that some days they may be more skitish than others.

The noise and vibration of a wounded bait fish attract fish. They put rattles in a lot of lures now. must depend on what the noise is. The trout in small streams get spooked by what they can see, bright colors and large shapes out sid eof the water scare them off.

seriously, i figure the surf probably puts out enough vibrations so that they can't hear or feel a whole lot

After many, many years of exhaustive scientific research, I can positively and conclusively state....................
Maybe....................
Sometimes..........................
If you hold your mouth right.
( I ALWAYS curse as much as possible. )
But seriously now, if you exude Bad Karma and Negative Vibes, you attract Skate and Dogfish.
And that's an honest to God FACTOID.
As far as You know..........

smoothb, i am absolutely convinced you are right on the mark. now the question is how do we convince mapc to go snorkling at sandy point sit at the bottom and hit rocks together while we are fishing from shore.
jigm, makes a very good point. i have never used a lure with a rattle attached. have you had any success this one? oh and by the way do croaker only make that noise when it is out of the water? maybe that is a question for mapc.
anthony saw right through the long distance casting strategy; darn it.
wtr, i was always under the impression that propeller generated noise from a boat's engine can spook fish. and that is why the most effective way to troll is let out a great amount of line to get the offering as far away from the boat as possible.
thanks guys.
