View Full Version : Not fishing the summer

I am thinking about only fishing the spring and fall from now on. The summers only seem to bring croaker and spot--neither one excites me the slightest bit. Would I be a fair weather friend if I don't bother fishing once the limit drops to 18" until the fall?

Won't you be missing out on the blues, summer flounder, sea trout, crabs and naked flesh on the beach? Just a thought.

You just don't want to drag that 'pier cart' on the planks during the summer.:D

I think the skin factor is to be considered.

Where do you guys fish that you see skin?
Maybe your hook would get caught on the bikini top--got to watch out fishing near the women.
Hmm...haven't got a trout in the MD bay for 3 years. Blues are tiny and more of a nuisance than anything. I use to really enjoy catching big blues down in FLA. Nver caught a flounder in MD bay (mostly cause I don't try to I suppose). Don't go crabbing.

Depends what your motivations are for fishing. If you are just lookin to catch bigger spring and fall stripers, then quit now. If you enjoy wettin a line with friends and relaxin on the beach, regardless of the catch, I will see you at spsp.

To each his/her own. I personally like to fish the fall more than anything else but the summer is good too. The variety of species available in the fall is usually what I enjoy the most. In the summer it is nice to fish in just shorts and enjoy the scenery.

I can think of lots of worse things to do. But I don't eat spot or croaker and I do have work, school, and a family of four to worry about. I'm sure I'll fish once or twice during the summer, but that's probably it. I'd rather go down to Hatteras or go fish AI or IRI. I probably won't do much MD bay fishing this summer. Too much else to do.

I prefer spring and fall too. More fish, bigger fish. Plus I hate summer heat.
But I can't give up. I love being on the water too much, even if I am just catching dinks on bottom rigs.

Trips fishing for me in the summer are about more than fishing also, especially to the beach (HI). It used to be all year but as I admit to getting older now it's only after the water temps get over 65*. A typical trip to the beach in the summer for me also include the Family and water toys too, surfboards, boogies boards, frisebies, paddelball, etc. To me it's the perfect environment to relax in, no matter what you're doing. If you can't catch fish there's always the waves, hopefully.
Trips in the spring, fall & winter are usually with a single thought in mind because the weather conditions are not good enough for anything else.
However those summer trips to Hatteras aren't always possible, I try to make as many as possible but the Outter Banks are still a 3hr. trip.
Not sure about you but I'd be kidding myself if I thought I could go that long without wetting a line somewhere. Even if it's smalll stuff on 6lb. test and light tackle I've got to get that "fishing fix" every so often. Go a whole summer without fishing......................... you're a better man than me!!

Man, Spring and Fall are great but that is why Mother Nature put a variety of fish in the ocean! During the summer I plan on going for the big brown ups truck!(cobe) And also plan on a few trips for big sharks at AI. Flounder will be able to be caught along with Trout. If you were single and had no job you could fish 350 days out of the year and catch fish in the general tristate area. My .02:D

Summer time it's great to do anything you want and remember a bad day of fishing is better than good day of work anytime of the year.

Although there is a variety of species in the Va waters during that time, summer isn't exactly the best time for me either. If anything like last year, the motivation I lacked will keep me home more often. Planning to take the headboats out more often this summer. Early morning of course, because the sun just drains me. Leaves me zapped.......and that's not a good thing when ya have to go home and assume the role of "the person everyone depends on."
Perhaps with some of the dough you would save by limiting your trips to the piers in Md........you could splurge by filling up the gas tank and heading out Virginia way. With the variety of fish in our neck of the woods, head boats might be an option. It'll give ya the opportunity to wet a line.....and at the same time....not take too much of your valuable time away from the homefront, school and the job.
It's all about finding that balance.......with compromise being the only solution.:)

Husy, Take a ride on the ferry out of lewes, del. As you come in the cape may canal, on your right will be one of the best spots to catch weak fish and striper and blue fish. Sometimes, not all the time, the beach is clothing optional!!!!

Summers ok;a little slow but theres always good fish at IRI.I caught Flounder,Drum, and Stripers from there in July though it was crowded. The Deleware Sea Trout run is going to start in 2 weeks,Flounder n Blues will be there with them.Fall and Early Spring is Chesepeake time other than that I will travel.I fish the Eastern Shore below the Choptank and in Virginia as well.I hope to get my first big Red from the Barrier Island Surf in VA.Try to get out when you get the time.If we get a big drought we can atleast get some Trout,Blues, and Flounder close to home.I got my fingers crossed.

Don't sound so down you'll get into some decent fish;but if you got all that.Try to get out you can take them kids with you and I'll try to tone down the curse words if I'm arround them.

I'm not down, just came to the realization that, while it has been nice to catch a couple decent rockfish this spring, I no longer have any desire for spot and croaker.
So, I won't fish much. I will have to find a trip to AI and another to IRI or VA Beach area though. Less quantity for more quality.

50 lb plus rays in the bay on light tackle...
100 lb plus sharks at AI that eat steel leaders...
Blues at IRI that suck up all metal...
And best of all...stripers at IRI at night off the jetties with topwater plugs...
This is Summer fishing...Fish more at night and let the tourons do all the day driving in the traffic...
You got to get out on the jetty more often! ;)

When you can't enjoy catching and eating a
whole mess of golden jumbo spots in
June and July there is something wrong.
Have you been to see a docter yet?:p
I will put spot up against almost any
fish as far as table fare goes. Plus
they are a blast on ultra-lite. Then
you take the smaller ones and
live-line them. Catching bait in
the summer is almost as fun
as fishing!

We need to get you to the water more;Summertime is great.Even in July n August I catch tasty Flounder,Blues,Stripers,Small Trout, and I even catch Drum if the jetty isnt too crowded. They even catch Black Drum at the Choptank durring the summer;though you'll have to weed threw all the Stingrays to get them to take a pice of Crab.Black Drum will kick a Stripers butt especally at IRI.Summertime is great;come out and play. ;)

If they'll bite - I'll fish them all!
All the "suntans" are definately a drawing card as well. :D
It is a relaxing activity for me. The catch is secondary, but tasty!

As I've said a number of times, despite catching kingfish (whiting) and skates last summer, it was the best years I've had.
I was on the beach to watch the sunrise just about every weekend (and back out to watch it set a few times as well!)
It was the most relaxing summer I can remember - it definitely soothed my psyche.
That may not make me much of a fisherman, but I sure do love to fish:)

Skin gotta love it,but its not why I go to IRI in July for;Driving in Beach Traffic is a pain but its worth it .I cant wait to catch Black Drum at IRI in July that was too fun you'll love them Trevor they put on a hell of a fight those Stripers we've been catching don't fight as hard as a 11lb Drum in a strong current:eek: DAM.There was also rummors of catching them at CHSP on Clams. They catch them Black Drum up to 65lbs at IRI durring the summer. You don't know what your missin Husky.
