Fall is here and I have a question on decks
Bought a new house that has a deck on the back of the house, made of pressure treated wood; it's at the most 5 years old and looks great. What should i do to keep it this way?

Should I pressure wash it and apply some sort of water repellent or some transparent stain? How often does it require some TLC to make it look and last a long time?

hello orest
I've just finished applying some severe weather guard to my deck about 3 months ago and it looks great so far......although I do think it's too early to tell. the last house we have built, I've tried power-washing it and then applied thompson's water sealant, but it turned the deck darker for some reason and very slick with oily substance, so I tried something different this time ( and I hope I won't regret this in the future). This time (our third new house.......sheesh) I've boldly decided to use severe weather guard which is about $50 for five gallon at Lowe's........the kind I've used is the one that can be used on brick, concrete, and wood. I really like it alot better than those oily water sealant because our deck still looks as new and it really blocks out water/moisture pretty good. I liked it so much I've sprayed that stuff on my concrete drive way and walkway, even base parts of my house, well the brick parts anyways................I really think that severe weather guard is much better than the oily water sealant.
but then again, it's just my opinion. I'm definitely not a professional. I do wanna tell you this though.......my next door neighbor who chose to do that oily stuff.....well his deck is not the same color anymore......a bit darker and we did the spraying on same day. I used the bug/weed killer sprayer that u can carry on your back and went over after with brush just to make sure i've covered everything. I tried to use the paint sprayer but sheesh I think I sprayed the back yard more because of the wind. well, good luck with your project and God bless. |
