Into The Wild -- John Krakauer It's a short little book about a kid who has had it up to here with civilization. He heads into the wilds of Alaska and starves to death. Kind of a gloomy beginning, but Krakauer reconstructs his life's story with journals, interviews and solid journalism. It's a little straining in places but is a great read. A Walk in The Woods -- Bill Bryson There's a chapter where the author goes off on this riff about his fear of being eaten by bears; I had no idea watching a critter snacking its way up your shinbone could be funny. It's basically the story of two middle-aged idiots trying to hike the Appalachian trail and failing miserably. The Striped Bass -- Nick Karas I'm still reading this one, but I've never seen a more exhaustive (and exhausting) study of the linesider. It covers the biology, migration patterns and the collapse and recovery of the greatest gamefish that swims. Anyone care to add? |

Into the wild was a very good read, and its pretty short for those of you who may be literature-phobes.
The River Why? by David James Duncan If you're into fiction at all this book is a great read. The philosophy gets pretty deep at times, but the imagery and the fishing are great. Its an oldie, but goodie, and can be had for a couple bucks online. I read it for the second time about 2 months ago. If I hadn't already given my copy away, I would offer it here. |

Any of the 3 book by
Linda Greenlaw.
She was the female captain in the movie "The Perfect Storm". Title of her books : The hungry ocean : a swordboat captain's journey All fisherman are liars : true tales from the Dry Dock bar The lobster chronicles : life on a very small island "Linda Greenlaw may well be the world's only woman swordfish captain. Born in Connecticut and raised in Maine, she graduated from Colby College, where she majored in English and government. Named by Boston Magazine as one of the most intriguing women of 1997, Greenlaw currently lives on Isle au Haut, Maine."
