Topsail in late March?

Hey guys, Im new to surf fishing and had a few questions. The family is renting out a oceanfront house on topsail island and I was wondering what kind of fish will be out there. Im planning on getting atleast one surf rod/reel and doing some pier fishing too. What kind of fish are around and biting that time of year? ill be there from late march to early april. I plan on doing a lot of surf fishing during the day and at night. hopefully to catch us some dinner! Thanks for all your help! I appreciate it!

Hi Benny123,
Water temps will be the big factor as they can still be quite cold in late March. Years past I have seen blue fish in the surf that early and they will hit dang near anything but, mullet would be a best bet. There are schools of puppy drum running up and down the beach in the winter and if you are in the right place shrimp or mullet could do the trick. Make the most of it by having a bait rod soaking meat and another to throw soft plastic grubs...move them SLOW for best results in cold water. A heavy coat and a cooler of beer always makes the day better for me!
Good luck!

Hey eb angler,
Thanks for the info! Im not so sure about Bluefish, I think i caught one last year off of a pier and dont think i liked the tasted of the gray fish. but thanks for the info, Ive been planning on getting a rig with some shrimp just to sit out there close to the bottom while i use some topwater lures to fish while waiting. Hopefully theres some descent fish out there, we'll see! thanks again!
