Hi, can anyone recommend tackle specs to surf -fish outer banks (Corrola area) for croaker, spot etc.? Last year I used a 10' rod with 15lb Trilene big game, 2oz sinker. The fish I caught I didn't even feel on the line. I'd like something lighter that can still cast over the breakers.
Thanks
Tim

Just the wrong expectations... Try using good chunks of cutbait, bigger fish bigger pull..

When pan fishing I often break out my 6-7' rods with 10# test and flip em just beyond the wash. Never caught any mosters but ya feel them lil ones just fine.

When you fish Corolla in the summertime, you shouldn't expect to catch fish larger than your hand.
Anything the size of your hat is worth a backflip.

Timinator,
I utilize two - one is a 7' Tica/Okuma reel combo spooled with 10 lb. The rod is designed to toss lures from 1/2 - 2 ozs. Great for Got-cha plugs and jigs that trout favor.
The second is a 8' Tica/Daiwa combo spooled with 12 lb. The rod is rated for 1/2 - 2 ozs. It tends to work better on the pier and will also toss lures a tad further if distance is required. A good share of the time trout are found just feet from the water's edge, so I tend to lean towards the 7' rod.
The only downside to these rods is that they're both one piece. I have a truck so carting them around isn't a problem.
BTW - we're catching trout, as well as blues, here in Nags Head to our heart's content. Get here if you can. Blues on Got-cha plugs and specks on lime green/silver flake Curltails. On Monday there was no end to them on the pier.

One of my favorite Summer setups is 5 foot ultralight with 4 pound mono and no. 6 hooks. Like Cdog said, fish the drop off with small baits. When you hook a 12inch Sea Mullet with this rig it's "Off to the Races". Of course, if you any of any size the chances are you won't land it, but getting spooled is a rush.

I have Daiwa and Mitchell spinning reels loaded with 10# and 6# mono respectively, mounted on Shakespeare Ugly Sticks,6' and 7'.Handtied two hook bottom rigs, with either a 1 oz or 2 oz pyramid or sound sinker.you'll feel every fish you catch and still ahve the capacity to land specks, big pomps, and puppy drum.

I use a 5 1/2' Fenwick ( I use for LM fishining) with a Wally Mart package reel w/8#
This set up Is for when they are hitting just on the other side of the first breakers, and you will defently feel some pull on the line with it.

For that type of fishing I have 2 setups that I use. Both use Shimano spinners in the 4000 class and are loaded mostly with 12lb test.
One is a GLoomis SUR1023s and the other is a ST Croix Wild River WS86MHF2 both are a little pricy but they are very versitale. Oh I go down to a 1-1 1/2oz on the lead. These are still fun but they can take a good sized fish when you luck into them. Heck I fish for stripers with these rods. I have seen a couple of other rods in this class but you need to shop tackle shops to find them.
