I will be visiting my sister-in-laws family and would like to do some surf fishing down there. I would like to know of some hot spots and where to purchase bait. No one in her family fish, so I am on my own. :( Also what is everyone catching there?

spanish and blues are in full swing, but you might have to hit the pier for a better chance at the spanish. also you might have some luck on the flounder at masonboro inlet. throw in the mixed bag stuff like sea mullet and you should be able to hook into somethin. you can get fresh shrimp at the grocery store and it works as good as anything you'll find at the bait shop. good luck and post a report on how you do.

Thanks for the information. I will check it out. I am going to have to get a map of the area. Is there one that you would recommend that has the piers on it?

all the beaches in the area have piers. I recommend you go to Oak Island and fish Oceancrest pier. Wrightsville beach has a concrete pier but parking and cost can be a problem, Carolina/Kure beach is nice, with Kure pier being the best.

fishloser is right about ocean crest probably being your best bet, but it's a good 30-40 min drive down there. if you really wanna fish mercer's pier at wrightsville and save money on the parking, i would get up at sunrise and fish the early morning run and leave by 9. come back after 6 and fish the evening. parking at wrightsville is $1.25/hour from 9 to 6. you'll probly have better luck fishing during those times versus the middle of the day anyways.

The long beach piers are still at least 1 hr away from Wilmington. Stick to Carolina Beach, Wrightsville Beach, Topsail Beach piers.
