Anyone ever take the ferry over and spend some time in this wild environment? Looks like it could be a very good time. Isnt there an abandonded "ghost" village on one of those Core Banks?

Yep, Calo has a devout following that swear it is an island paradise. Check out WWW.drumwagon.com Plenty of links and other stuff to look at. Have fun, Kevin

the village - which is on the North part of the Island - can be accessed from Ocracoke - it's neat - but the bugs are atrocious - mean green flys which will devour you - you have to douse yourself in deet and take the spray can with you - you want to cover as much of yoyr skin as possible and douse your exposed skin in deet. We were dropped off by a ferry/water taxi service and guided ourselves through the village and walked from the village to the beach where we hung out and met the boat for our return. I would not advise this approach. The walk - with a blanket to lie out on and a bag with our stuff - was long - and the flies were worse and there was nothing special about the beach when we got there.

I would tour the village by foot and arrange for pickup at the same place you were dropped off or I would go on an atv tour (which my brother and his wife have done) which drops you off at the village and provides a guided walking tour of the village (no atvs on the village tour) and then you can ride the atvs to the beach - and fly thru the bugs.

You can also tour the lighthouse area of Cape Lookout which is south quite a few miles from the village and is accessed from the mainland - either Beaufort or Harkers Isalnd. There are some 4 wheel drive tours that may take you the span of the Island but I'm not that familiar with them.
