I am in MB want to start to do some cast net shrimpn' mainly for bait but might eat one or two. Need some pointers, already have a cast net. Just need spmepne to pint me in the right direction. I have a boat. Maybe someone would like to PM me with somepointers and a public hole with some prawns in em.

My instinct was to get up in the back creeks around little river and all that and around the reeds at high tide and cast net for them back in there. Sound like a good plan?

GO BUY SOME FINE GROUND FISH MEAL FROM YOUR LOCAL FEED STORE ITS MADE FOR SHRIMPIN MIX IT 1 POUND MEAL TO 5 POUNDS OF CLAY THAT YOU CAN ALSO BUY AT THE FEED STORE IN A POWDER FORM AND MAKE SOFTBALL SIZE BALLS OUT OF IT THROW IT ON THE BOTTOM AT NIGHT AT A LOWER TIDE PREFEREBLY NEAR OR ON A MUD FLAT IN A RIVER OR THE HARBOR AND THROW YOUR NET OVER THEM EVERY FEW MINUTES. THROW 5-6 OF THE MEAL BALLS IN NUMEROUS SPOTS IN THE GENERAL VICENITY OF EACH OTHER AND ROTATE YOUR CASTING TO THEM. WE USED TO MARK THE BAIT BALLS WITH PVC POLES AND 5-8 SOFTBALL SIZE BALLS AROUND EACH POLE SOMETIMES 12 13 POLES IN THE CHARELSTON AREA EVERY YEAR. BUT YOU GOT TO HAVE A LICENCES TO DO IT IF YOU MARK THEM. IF THEIR ON THE BOTTOM AND YOU CAN REMEMBER WHERE, YOUR THE ONLY ONE THAT KNOWS THEY ARE THERE ,YOU NO!! WE USED TO CATCH 60-100 QUART COOLERS FULL OF JUMBOS IN A NIGHT THIS WAY ON MUD FLATS OUT BUY THE YORKTOWN AIRCRAFT CARRIER IN THE COOPER RIVER IN CHALESTON. THIS WAS IN LATE 80s THROUGH THE MID 90s since ive done some serious shrimpin from a boat BUT I DONT THINK THE SHRIMP HAVE CHANGED SINCE THEN. JUST MAYBE THE MUD FLAT WE USED TO SHRIMP ON.ONLY SHRIMPIN I DO ANYMORE REALLY IS FOR LIVE BAIT BUT I STILL USE THIS METHOD JUST ON A SMALLER SCALE. ILL GO OUT THE DAY BEFORE AND THROW SOME SMALLER CLAY BALLS OUT AND ALWAYS GO BACK AND GET 5-10 DOZEN LIVE SHRIMP WITHOUT A PROMBLEM IN JUST A FEW MINUTES OUTTA SOME BAIT POOLS I NO IN SAVANNAH. UNFORTUNATTLY ALOT OF OTHER PEOPLE DO TO THEY JUST DONT NO I BAITTED THEM THE DAY BEFORE SO THEY WOULD STAY IN THE POOLS AT HIGH TIDE FEEDING AND GET STUCK ON THE LOW TIDE.

BUY THE WAY IF YOU DONT WANNA BUY THE CLAY GO TO THE MARSH AND DIG THE STICKY BLUE CLAY OTTA THE MARSH IT WORKS GREAT. A 20-30#BAG OF CLAY PROBALLY RUNS 5 -9BUCKS AND THE FISH MEAL ABOUT 5$ A POUND.THIS WILL MAKE ALL THE BAIT BALLS YOU NEED FOR ONE GOOD TRIP ON A BOAT TO A GOOD FLAT!!! ALSO MAKE THE "BALLS SOMEWAT PIE SHAPED OR FLAT IF YOUR IN STRONGER CURRENT SO THEY DONT ROLL DOWNSTREAM YOU NO WHAT I MEAN :D :D :D

Shrimp baiting out of season in SC is illegal, and you don't want to get caught, fines are large, plus confiscation of boat trailer and tow vehicle. It ain't worth it. A friend was stopped once with bait from the previous season and if it had not been rancid he could have lost his rig. On the other hand your plan @ LR is on track, mostly small shrimp but plenty good for bait, maybe enough for a shrimp cocktail or two. Good luck and save some for seed.

I have read the regs some but need to make myself fully aware of all the rules. I was thinking just using the cast net for now. Clinder I get what you are saying and have seen the bait for sale at bass pro also. Just looking to get some for bait right now not really looking for anything to eat, just enough to use. Good info guys, thanks.
