I'm going to be at Apache pier in mid-september, and I have never fished for red drum. I would love to catch a couple, but I know nothing about them. Are there any special methods for them, or any good ways to attract them? Any other info is appreciated. Thanks. :)

Fish finder rig. Fresh hunk of menhaden circle hook and a light drag :) . You can also throw mirror lures and spoons to try and get one to cooperate. Spinner baits will also work.

If you need to know how to tie them and stuff let us know I am sure we can find some pics for you. Or you can search the archives here and there might be something already in the list.

Can you use the same method when going after reds in backwater? I'd really like to get in to these come autumn. I will soon be getting the kayak when the used ones come out on discounts. Hopefully the alligators stay at bay.

Hey BB
This is how I tie my rigs from the beach, and all the info is already there.

I have never been in the backwater for reds. I just got my trolling motor hooked up about a month ago and have not really had a chance to get into the skinny salt with it. But from what I read you can take them on artifical grubs, spoons, spinnerbaits, mirror lures. I know you can get them from the jetties on mirror lures and spinner baits.

I would imagine a live finger mullet would make a tasty treat for a backwater red.

Good way to catch reds in the backwater is to cast out a live mullet on a flounder rig and slowly retrieve it. Pretty much the same way you fish for flounder. So along with reds you'll catch flounder too. Not sure about just targeting reds in the backwater, but you're sure to catch some this way.

In the back water I use a 1/0 and live greenbacks or mullet with no weight. Let it free swim. Would only use weight if I was on the beach. How much would depend on the current.

go to a store that sells saltwater tackle. they sell drum rigs. I dont use them i make my own but you can see what the most common drum rigs look like then you can either buy and use them or make and modify one like them to your specific likings., :D alot simpler that way.
