First, let me say that I've never seen so many people fishing before in my life!!! It appears as the whole United Nation was represented on the pier. From the Porta Potty to the end, it was elbow to elbow.

Fished from 10:00am-11:00pm here's the results:

CR'ed:
3 Seatrouts (10-12'')
1 blue (7'')
4 croakers (8-11'')
1 Scup (8'')
approx: 7 Spots
Skates and Dogfish (don't care to remember how many or size)

Kept:
1 Seatrout (14'')
1 Blue (13'')
17 spot (medium sized)

The majority also caught spot (not a blitz type of a day, but they were catching)

I heard there were quite a few reports and lots of talk of big flouder being caught at the pier.

Explains why IRI was deserted. On friday and Sat, I had and easy 30' between my 4 rods. :)

But I caught less fish. sometime it is worth batteling the masses.

Nice job.

Jeff

about the flounders too and quite a few were targeting them but did'nt see any pulled up. Oh, that place was a zoo even when I was leaving. In fact, bunch of cars were circling the parking lot looking for a space as I was leaving.

Hey TunaFish, as many times that I've fished IRI, OCM, and AI, I've never bothered to stop at Cape Henlopen. I see people post reports about it every now and then, and I'm thinking of hitting it Friday morning on my way down to AI. I assume you take Route 9 past the ferry dock and then it's on your left (bay side) after entering the park? I used to pier fish in the Carolinas frequently in the 80's, but I'm guessing this pier is probably lower (closer to the water) and perhaps not as long as those piers. Do you think that it may be decent conditions, or will those hurricane swells make it around the cape and stir things up there on the bayside? If the water is real shallow I'm guessing it will be pretty stirred up, but I don't know the water depth in that area. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, that's the direction. Yes compared to the piers in Carolina's, it is lower. I'm estimating it's around 10ft. As far as the bottom, I would say it's between 10-15 ft. deep. The inlet area is pretty much protected by barriers, so it's not as rough as some fishing areas. Since the fishing is pretty good right now, I think Ms. Ophellia won't affect the fishing that much. In fact, last year, I fished in a nasty day (late November with temp in the 50's and the 30kts wind blowing in and got splashed) and did real well with croakers).

If you do decide to go there, the side can get real crowded, try going all the way up front. There's usually plenty of room up there.

Plus it is a pretty long pier, so be prepared for a good walk to then end. There are pilings from old pier towards the end, should be a good spot.

Good Luck.

TunaFish and fyremanjef ... thanks for the info! I forgot to ask if the tides had much effect on fishing there. Seems like different places have better tides to fish, like at IRI I like either slack tide and the last hour of the IN tide, and at AI I like the high tide and the first hour of the OUT tide. Given the water depth you mentioned, I'm thinking the tide may not matter much, but I though I'd ask.
Thanks!

the tide will not matter much. However, different part of the pier will make the difference. When it's a dead low tide, the middle of the pier will do better than the front. When it's an incoming, the whole place will bust out in force. However, I noticed when the water is calm, the action is usually slow.
