thanks longcaster. I've been reading
and learning alot of knowledge from
you guys.
for example before this site I had no idea
what a shockleader was nor its importance.
My next cast could have been a total disaster.
I've got a 10' rod with a penn 7500ss
but i'm ready to graduate to the heaver artillery.
Should I fork out the dough for the more expensive rods or no?

Hi "bull city",
I'm glad your skill and confidence is improving. Before you spend any money, see if your fishing friends will let you try their fishing combinations so you can get a better feel for the type of outfit that will better serve your needs.

Bull,
I'm nowhere near the level of these guys, but just stepping up from an ugly stick to a Tica Graphite rod made a big difference in my distance. Got to agree with the previous advice, try some stuff out before investing.

Bull City, I have a 1509 Breakaway($350); and an expensive Zziplex. Last fall before the Red Drum Tournament in Hatteras I bought a $100-12' Tica; which throws 8nbait real nice. It is very light and will serve you well for a beginner rod. The heavy Ocean Master rods are a little more $ and will do the same job. I do not have one, but have friends that do and theylike them.; providing you are throwing 8-n-bait. If you are not going to be throwing 8-n-bait ; then buy a lighter rod. I like the 8-n-bait rods; because I love to fish at Hatteras. Trying out another persone equipment can be extremely helpful in helping you make up your mind before spending some hard earned cash. I believe that the Tica and OC for around $100 are very nice starter rods for surffishing. Just my .02 pelican man :) :)
Bull City, Where did you get the 535 mag?
