I have never fished SPSP before. I was going to bring some rods and try Romancoke or Matapeake but it sounds like the fish are leaving and only dinky perch are left. Someone said that SPS still hold good sized perch. Is that still the case? For how long would you expect perch to be there? Also do you fish off the pier for the perch or the beach? Any pointers much appreciated.

thanks

No fishing pier at SPSP but there is a dock thats around 100' long. If your looking out at the boat ramps it's to the left slightly, it's inside the lagoon or whatever you want to call it with the boat ramps so it's not surf fishing. People crab and fish from it all the time though, never seen boats tie up to it (I could only imagine the conversations that would go one if someone did). I've goofed around with an ultra light and spinner for perch in there before. I wouldn't go there to fish but if I was going to picnic or whatever I'd grab a rod.

SPSP has some good size perch... i caught plenty of 8-9" perches. Try looking for a ranger that drives around with his truck. He'll tell you the good spots to fish. I caught a 9" perch with a cutbait/spot, and mostly with bloodworm and BWFB. You'll need a surf rod to cast far. Also, to avoid snags, don't reel-in slowing... once you cast, wait .. and if there's no action, pull and reel in as fast as you can to keep your rigs float above the ground and avoid snags on the bottom of the shallow area.... I've seen some people lose 4-6 snags... but i only lost 1, fishing for about 5-6 hrs.

How long do perch usually stay available at SPSP? Is it open 24hrs? I will going at night and would prefer to fish off a pier or the beach. When you go there do you usually fish off the beach?

thanks.

I am trying to decide if its worth going to Matapeake/Romancoke over SPSP.

Is it open 24hrs?SPSP is not 24hrs in the wintertime. If it hasn't changed to limited hours yet, it will soon.

Not much there this time of year anyhow.

As far as which is better... SPSP, the Coke or the Peak? Take your pick. Its all a crap shoot this time of year. Don't expect much at any of them... but there's always the chance a hoss will swim by and it's your day. ;)

THX BubbaBlue. I know its a crap shoot this time of year. I have usually hung my rods by now unless I make a trip to AI. I had read a posting that ggod sized perch were still available and I love to eat perch so I was hoping to bag a few plate fulls before they all go away for the winter.
