I think a 12"Okuma Solaris is the best choice; The guides are large, the rod is lightweight, and you can throw 4-8oz on it making usefull for alot of aplications. The OM is a nice rod but its not a good Spinning rod;thier more for Baitcasting Reels;if you get my drift. The reel I would buy is the smallest model Shimano Baitrunner with 20/6 Braid on it or 12lb test mono.

If you are looking for bay rod, Okuma Solaris is pretty good deal. It handles 3 to 6ozs well. Match it up with Okuma baitfeeder(Coronado) reel and you have a pretty decent setup around 160 dollars. Rod has a fuji concept coated guides and a fuji padded reel seat. Rod itself if made out of IM6 graphite blank.
If you want to lower the price of the rod you might want to check out the new Okuma Logitude Surf Rods, they are about 20 to 30 dollars cheaper.
I have a Tica and I like the rod but they don't break into even sizes, so its a pain to transport. My friend's had guide problems, top guide's inner circle fell out.
I have a Tsunami which is 9 feet. I like the rod. Its much like Tica but better components. Its about the same price as Tica.
Out of Tica, Tsunami and Okuma, I like Okuma for its price and decent components.
I can't speak for OM because I never used one, but from what I read on the boards its more of a 8 and bait rod for the ocean. And I'm not sure how it will load and cast with only 3 to 4 ozs...
I guess if I had the choice, I'll get both, a setup for the bay and a setup for the ocean. Using OM in the bay for spot, croaker and perch seems like hunting with a shotgun for squirrels...

I just purchased a 12'' OM with the Dawai Emblem 5500 and I love it. It casts very well with 4 ounces and I can also throw it a mile with an 8 ounce. If I had to change something I would of purhased the Daiwa Emblem 5000 series cause the spool is a bit smaller. On the Emblem 5500 I was able to spool 380 of 50 test power pro on it. Tested it out at 3r's and was able to detect the smallest of hits as well as bring in a 25lb skate with ease. I also like the Diawa Emcastpro 5000 reel which is cheaper at around $75. I spent a total of $260 on the 12' OM rod and Emblem reel and I love it.

I use two 12ft Solaris on the Bay and and the surf. Sure the OM handles 8 n bait better but if I have to throw that all day I really dont like being on the water. As for the okuma bait feeders I think shimano bait runner is far superior. Theyve been making baitrunners longer than any other spinning reel that has there own model. I say a Solaris with Shimano 3500 is one of the best all around rod/reel combos out there. Give Okuma a few years on there baitfeeders and theyll be right up there.Just my 2 cents

Unless he's going to be tossing a soup can of lead, the Solaris is your rod. I have a number of them and love them. Anything over 6 and bait I'd move to the OM.

Good choice on the rod CDL. I would look at the daiwa emblems for that rod, or the bigger stradic's

I would go with the Solaris with the okuma bait runner (epixor). It is one of the best bait runner reels out there. But those penn rods are nice for the bay so either way you can't go wrong Big L :D
The Eplixor is fine for a bay reel, but it cant hang in the surf as well as the Coronado CD90. Either way the customer service is great at Okuma

Those Cd90 Are Like Having A Big Azz Coffe Grinder On Your Rod I Have To Go With A Lighter Reel That's Why I'm Going With The The Tica Spinfocus 4500 Gt 6:2:1 And Very High Speed Retrieve And It Only Weights 14oz's And 390 Yards 12lb Test I Cant Go Wrong And I Can Keep It In My Hand All Day W/o Being Tiried.
