Good morning all
Fished the north pocket for 3 hours Friday morning ... just a couple bumps. Stopped at Oyster Bay in OCM for bait to use later in the day, and in walks a guy and his buddy (John & Michael) with a 45.5 inch 36.5 lb cow. It was really fat! We ask where it was caught and they said 79th st.
So, rather than going back to get some rest before fishing again at sunset, we join them at 79 st for some more action. We'll it was pretty quiet. We (Bryan CampNFish Orosz) and I had 5 poles going, with FishBites, cut mullet, cut blue, blood worms, and finger mullet. I told Bryan I had to get something from the car, which is the "magic phrase". Why? Because when I walk away stuff happened ... usually big stuff, ,and this was no exception. I go the car and am returning less than 5 minutes later and there is Bryan 5 minutes into a 10 minute battle. Finally he drags in his biggest bluefish ever ... 32" and 10lb. A little short of citation size, but still a nice fish. It was caught on a dinky little bluefish rig ... you know, with two hooks and one yellow and one orange little floats. Bait was cut blue and cut salted bunker fillet.

Bryan and I ended up turning in for the night right after the picture was posted. 7 hours in the cool windy weather can wear you down, but it was reassuring that my nephew, who is half my age, was just as tired as me!
Bryan is a big Penn State fan, and I suspect you'll see him post some feedback on his attire. Short sleeves only lasted for a short time because the wind made it feel cooler.
By the way, we were at the north pocket from 7:00 till 9:30 if I remember correctly. We did see one guy throwing metal catch a nice trout ... looked to be about 17-18 inches. Another guy throwing metal caught 4 very short stripers.
Well, to continue with the weekend report, we arrive at AI Saturday morning before sunrise, and fished until low tide (10:30, give or take). Bryan got one short flounder. other than that we didn't get even a bump, except from the hoards of crabs. We had to go to ball float rigs and whole mullet rigs just to keep from losing all our bait to the ravenous calico crabs.
We stopped at stinky beach on the way back to OC, but nothing going on there. We were the only ones there until a large Korean family arrived in a minivan to fish the rockpile. I think they got a couple tog before we left.
Stopped at 9th street on the bay and talked to folks fishing there. Nada!
Had lunch, a little catnap, and then hit the beach at 28th street at 2:30. There's a decent hole there still (we fished this hole in the early summer with success), and it's got a float in it, so I'm thinking it's a crab pot. Lots of crabs out there ... even pulled a couple up to the suds. Caught three snapper blues just before sunset.
Sunday morning we had breakfast at Laytons at 92st street and Bryan headed home. I decided to fish since I have Monday off. Stopped at 79th street to see how John and Michael are doing since the cow, and it turns out they were being skunked since then. Also spoke with Dan (Mgr.Pain) for a few minutes. He’s relatively new to surf fishing, so I gave him a few tips before continuing my trip northward.
Went up to 3Rs and chatted with a few fishermen ... nada. One had been at IRI at sunrise ... nada.
On to CHSP pier for one last chance. Got there around 9:30. Not a lot happening ... I picked up a 13" croaker, one trout just short of 13" (released, of course), and one small (thankfully) skate. The tally for the pier for the morning was something like:
15 decent croaker
20 snapper blue
2 ling cod
handful of trout
numerous skate
handful of short striper
There must be a lot of spike trout out there off the end of the pier, based on the frequent tap-tap-tap and then no hookup. Either that or there are some little sea bass or sand perch out there, however none of those varieties were caught. All in all pretty slow fishing, but not as slow as the surf was.
One "hot spot" side note ... spoke briefly with a local buying some eels early Friday afternoon. He said he was going over to the route 54 bridge west of Fenwick because it was hot for stripers. We would have tried it if we had an extra day to fish and knew exactly which location he was referring to. I scouted the area on Sunday but there are actually three bridges pretty close together. I'm guessing it's the bridge closest to Fenwick.
Well, hope you all find better fishing in the coming weeks. It should heat up unless the wind pushes the action too far out!
