I fished the shore two weeks ago w/out a bite for about 3 hours but I did see a few big schools of big LY close in.
However I did troll that weekend too and did well in the shipping channel.
Giving it hell this holiday and will report my luck.

i went fishing there at the pier. caught a couple keeper stripers 18 and 22", a bluefish 18", and a seatrout 14". caught the stripers on lures on the left side of the pier. i got lucky and caught the two stripers in about 10 min. alot of dinks after that. you can see some stripers swimming around the pilings under the lights. the trout were sure tricky, they seemed to bring the line in when you're not looking, so you see slack, but nothing...stole your bait...at first thought they were crabs. caught about 3-4 trout one being a keeper.

Well, I took a shot at PLO...just came back from there.
Too much caffeine, I can't sleep now even after fishing in cold weather for 10 hours
Anyway,
surprisingly, the weather was not as cold as expected (no wind at all).
I fished on the pier from 2 PM-Midnight.
We only saw one other group at the pier and they left before the dark, so we pretty much felt like we rented the whole pier for $8, hahaha.
Not a single bite with cutbait (spot and croaker), nothing, nada.
Then I started using lures after seeing fish flirting at the surface.
There were so many rock fish under the lights.
(This was during high tide).
I didn't even have to cast the lure out.
Just dropped below the lights, move it in jig-jaz motion or up and down, and watch several of those them rock fish taking a shot my lure.
We CRed about 20-25 of them.
Unfortunately, they were all under sized (10"-14").
In the end, it was kinda disappointing trip, since it was probably my last fishing trip for the season ; and again, no keeper fish! :(

casting further away from the pier at the further shadow line maybe about 20-30 yds from the side...that's where i seemed to catch the "bigger" rockfish.
