I saw a man fishing with telescopic fishing rods. I don't know how good they are but they looked very compact and convenient.
So, I went Basspro shop to look around but couldn't find any.

Is there anywhere I can buy them?
Does anyone have any experience with them?
And, are they ok for saltwater fishing?

They run the gamut from novelties not worth the plastic they're made from to high end, high performance rods from Japan.

These are over 12 feet long and rated up to 150 grams (5.24 ozs) and cost $400 to $600.

I have only seen telescopics here in the states that are for panfish etc., I have never heard of a capable surf rod offered for sale here.

Edited to add . . .

I remembered a site some carp fishing buds of mine use and went there . . . Lo and behold they have some tele-rods. This place (from what I've been told, I haven't dealt with them) doesn't carry junk so give them a look.

I have a 5' freshwater telescopic rod which was given to me back in the early 70's and it's still workin great. It's a handy rod to keep in your vehicle. I leave it in mine with a few lures cause ya jus never know when you'll run across a good fishin hole ;) I've never seen any salt water telescopics but I'd definitely give em a look.

I would think that a surf telescopic rod would not be your ideal rod of use, especially at that cost. The way i look at it is if there are more areas in the pole with detachable areas the more likelihood the rod has much weaker break points. I like the 2 piece surf rods (minimal break points) cathcing a Hog on a telescpoic rod I would think can greatly increase the tension point at all those break points on the rod. For $400-$600 I would rather invest in a custom rod then a telescopic rod.

I have a telescoping metal (aluminum?) rod that I bought back in the early 80's when I travelled a lot. One trip I used it off the marina wharf in Bermuda (busines trip ... tehehe). I remember landing various small colorful tropical fish. I also caught a number of 16 to 20 inch sennet (related to barracuda), and had a decent barracuda (or so it appeared to be) clamp onto (and eventually chop in half) one of the sennet as I was reeling it in. Caught everything on rattle traps and spoons. Even had a grouper swallow, but later spit, a small sennet that I was reeling in.

Well, back to the point ... I'll have to go see what brand that rod was. I think it was around $50, and was less than 16", and extended out to around 7 feet if memory serves me correctly. It was very "whippy" but it was easy to get used to, and obviously was capable of battling decent sized fish (anyone who has done battle with a 10lb grouper probably knows what I mean)! If I locate it I'll post a follow-up.

telescopic surf rod out of the bay a few years back which I now have a Penn Reel on. It handles 3 to 6oz of weight pretty well and i can cast it a decent distance - not as far as my 12 foor fiberglass set up - but almost - it's not as stiff as a fiberglass rod - or my graphite Tica for that matter - so the tip jumps around a good bick with the wave action. It's real lite which is nice - and it shrinks from 12 ft to less than 3. Since it was free I've been happy with it - but I probably wouldn't buy another one if I lost this one or it it crapped out - the telescoping factor - the fact that you can collapse it down for storage - just isn't that important since I'm already toting around a bunch of heavers as it is.

I had a 12 ft. tele. but broke it a year ago in O.C. It was made by a co. named D.A.M. the rod was called the Royal -a very good rod Graphite if I remember right could throw 6 oz 150yds with no problem if you do a search "telescopic fishing rod" you should get anough info to put you in the right area. i hope this helps you i really enjoyed my tele rod very compact and durable :) :) take it easy

P&S Fishing (try a google search) has a rack of different telespcopic rods

For what its worth there's a reason most people don't use telescopics, but they do have their uses ;) Think they come into their own for quick after work sessions.

With so many joints in the rod, it probably wont load all that well. 150yrds and 6 onces sounds a little long....how many casts was that? JK :D :D

I wouldn't use one for saltwater, but I am sure someone makes a decent one
