I have tried everything....and my face still
gets super irritated. Shaving in the shower
helps a great deal and I shave with the
grain and then finish off by going against the
grain. I have tried just about every type of
balm out there and they all work equally
bad...;)
I have found the best method is to use
an exfoliant and then shave in the shower
(must be super hot water) and then a
balm.
What works for you guys?

Hey Talapia, try using the electric razor. I use a Braun and it works great! Of course, it could be the exfoliant you're using too, I'd stay away from the Agent Orange brand.... :p

i just shave every other day. My facial hair is really tough and trying to get a close shave every morning is painfull, so I skip a day or 2; and then don't shave on weekends.

I USE A MACH 3 AND I SHAVE IN ONE DIRECTION . EITHER YOU GO WITH OR AGAINST THE GRAIN BUT NOT BOTH. THIS WILL CAUSE IRRITATION,RAZOR BUMPS:eek: ,AND ALSO HELPS PROMOTE INGROWN HAIRS:( . IM SURE YOU DONT WANT THAT. I USED TO USE MAGIC SHAVE BUT THE SMELL AND MIXING GETS OLD. ALSO ONLY GO OVER THAT AREA 2X AMD NO MORE. WASH YOUR FACE AND RUB SOME ALCOHOL ON YA HANDS AND RUB YOUR FACE GOOD. THIS WILL HELP ALOT. IT DID FOR ME. I USED TO HATE SHAVING BECAUSE OF THE IRRITATION MYSELF.

Those 3 bladed ones like the Mach 3 cut
my face to shreds.
I tried an electric one once and it did not
get close enough for me. I would have
to shave again by the afternoon.

I would buy a really good brand of electric. I got a cheap one for Christmas one year and boy did it burn!!!!! It would take skin if I was not careful. It was worse than with a regular razor.
I use Gillette M3Power. It has 3 blades but it has a AAA battery in the handle. It vibrates while you shave. I have not had razor burn since I started using it. I have no clue why or how it works but it does for me. I shave every day and have no burn. I do not use a balm, just Adidas after shave. It vibrates like crazy.

Hey Talapia,
I have the same problem. I am also allergic to my own hair    . What works for me the best and I have tried it all is the Gillette Mach 3 type, but the one that vibrates. Sound really strange but it has reduced the burn alot. I still get it some times. I also use a shave cream with lanolin in it.

I'm with FishBreath. I use a Braun electric razor and after your face gets used to it, you will find that it shaves as close as a blade. It will probably take about 2-3 weeks for your beard to become accustomed to it, but after that it's smooth sailing. Also, the hot towel or cloth works to soften up the whiskers. I also shave every other day and have had no problems for the past couple of years. The stuff you're putting on your face may be part of the problem. I had the same issue and quit using any kind of lotions, etc... and switched to electric. I'll never go back.

Use new blades, go with the grain and thats it. Hot water to wet the face, cool water after you rinse.

About 30 minutes after you wake up. Get a shower immediately before hand as it softens the wiskers. Shave with the grain (against gets a closer shave but more irritation) and only go over an area once (sometimes a second swipe for those missed patches). Warm damp towel to wipe afterwards. If you cut yourself, use a styptic wand (sticks work better than the liquid) on the cut. If you still need an aftershave, spend the extra money on an alcohol free aftershave (top end aftershaves, typically not at your local grocery store/wal-mart). The alcohol based aftershaves contribute to dry skin which is a contributing factor in razor burn.

I believe there will always be some burn unless you're a lucky baby faced baby skinned momma's boy.

You should look into some hair removal if it is that much of an issue.
You can also get a shaving chit (request) for shaving problems. This will allow you to keep some stubble. How many years do you have? I'm surpised you haven't had a chit yet.
Me, I'm half Korean so the facial hair is not an issue. I just hope the Italian side doesn't pull through and start showing on my back!

Chalk me up as a member of the irritated and hopeless shaver's society. Like others have said I've tried it all, best I can do is a Mach 3 with Edge Advanced Gel Extra Protection, still end up looking wind burnt a lot of the time?! Sensitive skin + Tough Hair= Burn

Rip them suckers out with some tweezers .. one at a time!
Hell, all the hair fell outta the top of my head. Would have gladly lost the face forest instead! :D
I don't suffer from tha dreaded razor bumps, but get some darn bumps in the back my neck under the hair I have.
I'm one clean guy, but I think it almost has to be in reaction to something I have eaten..too much junk food or something.

I will first mention I am a FAIR skinned caucasian so you know my skin type. I had the same problem, irritaded, throat area would break out.... For the past three years I've used Vaseline intensive care lotion (no kidding) on my face, then shave it off, then splash warm water then re-apply the lotion again. The lotion acts as a lubricant as the blades go over your skin so as to not irritate the skin. And also moisturizes immediately. I stopped using shaving cream, gel or whatever else all together. And this also stopped the throat area from breaking out when wearing ties.
I used the alcohol (rubbing) in the past and other alcohol based after shaves, and they would leave my face cool in the beginning, but after a while, the alcohol would start drying my skin out and leave it feeling irritated, although it wasn't bumpy.
People believe you have to feel it for the after shave to be working, but you really want to avoid the drying out... which alcohol based products do.
This sounds funny, but I learned it from the movie American Psycho.... Man, that guy was sick, thorough, but sick...

Hmmm, may have to give that lotion
method a try. I agree that the alcohol
based after shaves dry your skin out
and make it feel worst after a while.

they are junk. Change blades often. I change sometime weekly. Try using Noxemia(sp) in the blue jar. To soften your facial hair before shaving put hair conditioner on it during your shower. I shave in the shower and run very warm water over my face before I shave.
And any missed spot I use Curel hand lotion to get them.
And I don't use any after shave lotion or anything else.

I feel for you. I only have to dip the razor under some tap water, get the fuzz off of my lip, flatten out the sideburns, get the chin, then clap the razor against the sink. The neck is about the same, but it's a little more tricky so I don't get the burn. EXGF gave me some Clinique facial lotion that works great for my neck area. Called Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion. I don't know if your cojones are too big to go to the counter and ask the good looking girl in the white coat for a bottle, but it's definitely worth the 5 minutes of shame. Kind of pricey though. I try to spread it out by keeping my face wet and applying the lotion on top of it.
