I was able to talk my brother into riding down from DC to Bogue Inlet Pier for a day of king rigging and plugging. We packed the car and headed out around 11:00PM on Saturday night and pulled into Bogue Inlet Pier at 5:30 AM and selected the choice "#16" king rig slot. Winds were blowing around 10-15 mph out of the south and turned stronger out of the SW later in the day.
Action started early with numerous cigar sized blues on gotcha plugs. The blues began to come in in greater size and numbers. Early in the morning word reached the end that a kid was hooked up with a huge bluefish that struck a small blue he was reeling in on a gotcha. With the help of several kind folks, the kid decked the 16LB blue (on 10 lb test). Soon after, large chopper blues began to hit our king rigs, although early on more fish were lost than decked. I lost a pretty good sized one early in the morning, and had several other baits destroyed before decking a 6lb chopper and releasing it around lunch time. Later my brother caught a good sized blue that was flopped off while handlining it up to the deck, and around 3:00PM I landed a 9lb 10 oz blue. Sadly, no cobia or kings showed their face, but hopefully we will be seeing them soon. Thanks again to the kind folks at Bogue for making out of towners like me feel welcome.
