My local place charges $16 and I usually
just give them a $20 which seems to be
fairly standard there. An average cut
there takes about 40 min per person.
I could get my haircut once a week,
but usually only get out there twice
a month.

Takes 5 Min. I Got Tired Of Having To Wait In The Barbershop So I Went To Sams Club And Bought Some Clippers That Had A Dvd With It. That Was 6yrs Ago Im Doing Mine And The Kids. The Barberwas Getting Too High With Those Prices And Of Course You Gotta Tip. Every 2 Weeks Adds Up So Now I Can Have A Nice Cut When I Want With No Wait.:d :d :d

$5 every three weeks on the CG base downtown Charleston. He doesn't use the vaccum thing with the clippers like I've experienced at most of the military installations. He has just one chair, uses a straightblade for around the ears and the back of the neck, and clippers up top. A real barber!
The guy that cuts my hair is 80 years old, so it takes a while to get out of there. He used to be in the Coast Guard as well so he has some sea stories.
Funny thing is after talking with him for a while, he used to play in the same band as my grandfather way up in New York over 50 years ago! He noticed my nametape on my uniform and started rapping off about a guy he knew up in New York with the same name.
I tip him $5. At a cost of 5 bucks, I feel like I'm stealing.

That price is unreal. Suprised that he still
uses a straight blade. I thought all barbers
on military bases were banned from using those due to health concerns.
I generally avoid military barbers like the plague. They are conditioned
to do a chop job and get folks in and out. With my thin Korean hair
it takes time to do a proper fade job and most eithor do not know
how to fade hair correctly or do not want to take the time to do it
right.

Nothing. I'm balding so I try to hide it (by shaving the rest of it off) Shave 2x week.
But back in the day before I was married and cared what I looked like, I would spend $20-$30 + tip every month to 6 weeks at a 'french sounding' salon by a guy named Hans or something. I'd get the latest style or look such as:

When I did pay for the haircut, it was $25 for the cut, $5 for tip, and $5 for shampooist tip... it took about 25 min to get the shampoo and cut, sometimes having to wait 45 min to get in the chair (with appointment)
You can learn the fade... I am like MANDINGO and got tired of the barber.... I started with simple haircuts... using the guards and all. I even use to cut my brother's hair when we lived together.... Cutting hair is not too hard once you learn it... I sometimes let it grow long... and sometimes keep it tightt (thats with an extra "t"):p the point is, you can learn the fade... I do it, maybe I will send pics when I cut it next. I usually have the Mrs. or someone square off the back....
If you mess it up a little, just go a little shorter than normal... I trim down little by little until I get the desired length and the appropriate fade.
The guards will guide.... use them... I have enjoyed my haircuts alot more since I have been doing it... It doesn't leave the job to someone else so that I can pay the person, tip the shampooist, tip the cutter, drive home and then complain about it...
Oh yeah, it takes about 40 min to cut, sweep and shower..... and the clippers were $25, 3 years ago at Target

There are fades and then there are fades.
Sure you can do a fade on your own hair
by just going down with the guard sizes.
The fades that I like on my hair would be
impossible to do yourself. You might be able
to get away with doing some on the side,
but there is no way that you could do the
back...not the way that I like it.;) From
my experience 90% of barbers will tell you
that they know how to do a fade...I can
tell you that what 90% of those barbers call
a fade is not what I call a fade. It takes a
very experienced barber at least 30 min to
do a proper fade haircut the way I like it.
Generally if someone cuts mostly black
hair then they will know the type of fade
that I want. If they cut mostly white hair
then I have found that they do not have
the experience necessary to do a fade the
way I like it. Keep in mind that I have half
black and half korean hair, so there are
additional challenges presented by my
hair.

AHHH I understand now... aw tu kitch chi nay sayo ;)
I absolutely agree with you... Forgot to mention that I am caucasian, with blonde-ish hair, which is similar to the color of my scalp, so the errors are more forgiving than say a dark shade of hair, against a lighter or a contrast in color to the skin tone....
Also, Talapia, I have not met you on the water, only on the cyber-bay, but I like the topics you present to others... You strike me as a real thinker... Hope to meet you one day in person.. I grew up not far from Ft. Washington....
Anyo ga sayo

For God's Sakes.....What the hell is goin' on here???? The other day it was razor burn and face cream, now its hair salons and getting "fades"....
I cut my hair with a 1/4" guard on Wal-Mart clippers, and take the guard off once a week to do my face...IF I want it close, I use a NEW dollar store twin blade. DRY! Splash of green Skin Bracer...DONE!
NO FACE CREAM, NO HAIR SALONS, NO COMBS, NO FANCY SMELLING PERFUME.
I mean no disrespect to those of you who like or need these things, I'm just extremely glad that I DON'T GIVE A RAT'S REAR END what my hair or face looks like!
WHO'S FISHIN' THIS WEEKEND, OR DO YOU ALL HAVE HAIR APPOINMENTS?:D :D :D :p :p :p

it hasn't seen a brush or a comb in years.
I always stop in the grocery and walk longingly down the isle of brushes, combs, hair gel, brylcream, spray, palmade, butch wax, and conditioners.
Many times I catch myself with a tear in my eye, wishing for days and hair gone by ...
BYE-BYE that is!  ;) :D
