interestingly though, it doesn't have have all the federal buildings in dc blurred out like google earth does.
Bet they're going to hear about that soon......

yeah... one interesting aspect to it is that you can view the differences between google maps, and microsoft's map.
If you zoom into the washington monument and toggle between google and microsoft, you can see the shadows at difference place...

You realize that's still using Google maps, right? It's a mashup with Flash as the interface, but with the same satellite data. But still a nifty hack.

flea, I was talking about the technology, not the image itself. =)
Currently, I'm on a research project for FAA who wants to develop a web app for post analysis flight data. We are trying to decide what technology to use for the client. So far we've tried Ajax(google map, google mail and etc) but found some limitations when doing heavy graphics work. We are now looking into Flash as another option and it looks promising. Server side comprise of J2EE, Oracle and possibly Hibernate.
check out video of Fedex's attempt to land their planes when there is a severe weather around an airport... http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6886880938991195179&q=fedex
Graphics you see are all done in Java swing.

I'd say it's better than Google Earth too because you can access it where ever. Don't need to have the program with you if you're on the road.

What do you mean server side compromise J2EE, Oracle, Hibernate ?? That does not sound like a compromise to me ... sounds like fun!
I have never used flash but I hear that it gets a bad rap. Most people miuse it and thus has attained this rap. I hope you succeed with your endeavor. Ajax is still a pretty cool technology I have yet to been able to really get into it like I want to.
If you don't want to use JSP you can always look into Tapestry. Its been great for me. I have never done serious web programming until last year ... I have always been a back end server / Oracle / linux guy. Going into Tapestry was great as I did not have to unlearn anything.
( I Guess this thread will get deleted or flamed ... we geeked out abit =) Wait a minute this is the Lounge so its all good !

Dude, you're in the Lounge. Any subject is cool here. (And I'm a nerd, too. No way I'd delete a thread like this).
I can't figure--is this thing using Maps or Earth? Because if it's using Earth, I'm much more impressed. The maps are significantly more detailed but requires you to download their client, while Maps is purely an AJAX-based app that runs in any browser.
