Here's part of my weekend report from that sunny beach on the lot 12/13 border. The whiting were so thick you could walk on them today. With thick whiting, croakers, and sailor's choice, my favorite fish were abound, sharks. All fisherman who were fishing, fleas, clam, shrimp, or chunk bait caught whiting that seemed to average ~10-12". So this was a good day. Most bites for whiting were from 6 AM-2 PM with a die off after low tide (~2 PM). With all the croakers and sailor's choice out I kept live bait on my 300 yd line and was not disappointed (sort of). I had 5 sharks on the line for 12 hrs of work. I had two backtrack on my line when no more than 100 yds from shore and bite me off past my wire. Then I had several spit the hook. This also does not count that hits I had which sent my reel screaming and the live bait completely ripped off my hook leaving no way to set the hook. One shark must have been huge as he made my big water 11' rod damn near double to the point of what I thought would be snapping. It tore out 150 yds easy on a medium drag setting before shaking free. This was one of the days that leaves you excited and a little let down. It would have been nice to bring one on the beach for a photo, but I still caught plenty of fish. My father-in-law and I caught ~15-20 whiting, along with tons of croakers and sailor's choice. The bluefish were not out no matter what jigs, spoons, chunkbait you used anywhere within the last sandbar. I didn't see or hear of a single bluefish caught the entire day. Tomorrow I'll be back out there wetting my lines very early and dreaming of actually landing one of the rod benders I had yesterday. Until tomorrow, get those lines wet and celebrate our fallen heroes.
