Hello all,
I've been reading up on your forum as I am new to the area and looking for all the help I can get. I have fished the causeways out at Port Canaveral a couple of times but only with moderate luck. I am going out to try for some fish tonite but wanted to see if anyone could point me into a good spot. I'm not able to fish more than once every two weeks, just recently had a baby ( 4 month old boy ) and he gets most of my attention. I would really like to try for a big fish and I don't care what kind. See I'm going home next week for a couple of weeks and I would love to take some awesome pics back to the boys that are land locked in Kansas. If anyone can tell me a good location within an hour or so of Orlando I would really appreciate it. You will definitely be hearing more from me on this here forum. I would also love to make it out to one of your PSYCO meets. Plans for buying a kayak in the near future, socking away some pennies right now. Anyway if you got a spot to send me I really appreciate ya. Thanks

I'd try the Jetty Park pier with some live mullet. Might be able to tie into a redfish or shark. I've heard rumor of some decent kings not far out, of course you'd need a kayak for that.

If you don't care what you catch, jetty park might be a good bet. Especially if you are already familiar with the area around Canaveral. I've seen people catch some big stingrays off of there. Get yourself some dead bait and toss it a good distance out towards the channel. I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't catch a ray, shark or kingsized catfish. Make sure you have a decent sized dropnet (or make friends with someone who has one, most people on the jetty share).
Even better would be to do the above with one strong, stout line and just set it down. Next, take a medium rig, maybe 7ft pole, 12 lb line and fish directly below the pier that sticks out of the jetty. Rig up the line with 20lb flurocarbon leader on a standard sliding egg sinker bottom rig (don't dare use wire or a store bought rig!). Using finger mullet or live shrimp slowly move your bait from piling to piling along the bottom. You might catch a kingsized flounder which is much better tasting than the above mentioned stingrays. This also works with a standard leadhead jig to which the live shrimp or finger mullet is attached.

Does that jetty get really packed? I'm planning on getting there around 7:30 so I thought maybe some people would've cleared out. What about any other locations with a good pier that is open all night or at least until 10 pm.

It won't be bad on a week night like tonight, weekends (especially during the day) are crazy. Personally I always hope for a light rain, that usually scares away almost everyone. I just wear a rainjacket.
There is a pier in Cocoa Beach but I've never fished it. Also, there's one in Flagler Beach that I know of, supposed to be good. Your best bet is to stick with the oceanside fishing since you're looking to hook something real large. There are a number of access points along the intercoastal but your fish will tend to be smaller on average.
Checking the tides for Canaveral tonight, low is 6:22pm and high is 12:48am. Not the ideal tides if you're fishing from 7:30pm to 10:00pm. I DO like the incoming tide but I'd prefer it to closer to the high tide around sunset.

We went out with no luck. The winds were high and the fish weren't biting. One guy on the pier caught a sheepshead and another caught 3 baby bonnetheads. We moved over to a spot by the draw bridge I guess there is a boat ramp over there too. Caught one good sized blue and another fish took off with my light up bobber I was floating a pinfish on. I guess it's time to respool my reels. Thanks for the tips though.
