Could you possibly post up the photos that you posted (I think that it was over on fishmojo, but i don't have access over there) before showing the car top rod racks you built...the ones that used a pair of commercial ski racks. Seemed like I remember the idea you used was to put the commercial racks up front and then fabricated something on the back youself, thereby allowing more rods to be carried by a single pair of the commercial racks. I liked the idea and may want to "pirate" it.
Thanks in advance!

Think the pics are on my laptop, which is dead in the water right now. I see if I can find where I dumped them on the WWW & post.
I've been pretty happy with the way they work for an exterior rod rack.

No big hurry...I remember that it looked to be a pretty neat setup. I already have and use a set of Yakima's and love them. I am thinking about setting up something similar to yours so that I can carry more rods. I am usually ok, the problem coming when I have others and their rigs along with me.
PS.
Have you talked to Robert Vinay recently? I left the company I was working for (where he used to work) about a year ago and haven't seen him since. Hope he is doing well.
Thanks again!

Here 'tis. The back part of the rack is cheaper than another set of ski racks and keeps the rods spaced. 2X6 attached to canoe gunnel brackets. Make sure you drill the holes near the top of the board to allow clearance for spinners that hang below the rod. Also if you drive off with the ski rack up, less likely to have the rods fall off. ;)

Tommy, just sent you an email with a huge attachment for the website Let me know if you can open it.
Shunt, see Robert about every 3-4 months or so at the fishing meetings. Since he became a family man years ago, don't think he gets out as much. :D One of my favortie people.

Thanks guys for the help!
BW,
Did you find the need to put any kind of "padding" inside the holes that you drilled in the 2x6's to keep them from rubbing/scuffing the cork tape on the rod handles, or does it work ok without it?
Thanks again!

I've thought about padding but have never figgered out what would be best. No noticable wear on the cork that I've seem.
Only difference between V 1.0 and V 1.5 was getting the holes higher & using a neighbors commercial router to smooth out the holes & dress up the boards. Don't use spinners all that much but my buddies do & I carry bigger spinners for my dad & son when they fish & they will hit the roof if the holes aren't high enough.
Can also put the vertical Yakima Yak holder in between the rod holders & put the yak on the roof as well & carry up to 12 rods.
Unfortunately the rack and my arse is spending too much time in Raleigh. :( :(

I have that same problems w/ spinners hitting the roof of the truck, so I just turn the reel upward and set the handles resting on rod next to it. It works fine just takes a little time when putting the rods up. Nice rack by the way. I've got to try that and save me a few bucks.
Thanks for the picture, BW.
