supposedly the pier was sold to the North Carolina Aquiarium... I am waiting for more details. I am glad they are keeping it open, but but it will be curious to see what kind of changes will take place with state controlled management.

If this is indeed the case, we can be thankful that there is still a pier. Perhaps, just perhaps, the additional revenue the new saltwater license requirement will bring will help secure more places for the public to fish:rolleyes: With so many piers having gone by way of the dinosaur, public (city, state, federal) ownership, with all of its limitations (only open certain times, limited facilities, limited or restricted staff, etc.) may soon be the only option the shore bound angler has. Not the most desirable situation, but better than trading in one's fishing gear for a riding lawnmower and cleaning gutters in one's spare time:--|

This is indeed Most Excellent News!!
Hopefully as malcdncva said, this will become a trend in NC and we can look forward to more state maintained planks... ;)

I dont Know if any of this is a done deal yet. The town of Emerald Isle has applied for a grant with the state, and is working with the NC Aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores to appropriate money. If succesfull the Aquarium would have the opportunity to operate the pier, which is the way Jennettes pier is now operated. Can you enlighten us on this DD?
This is from the Carteret County News-Times May 21. It sure is a good sign

thanks for the update... I got my info through the rumormill and did not know how accurate it was. I will be back down there this weekend (found a $50 hotel in Jacksonville...SCORE!) and hopefully the gentleman in the big brown suit will escort me back to DC to meet my grill!

I fish there many times a week and the above is true to date. I have talked to some of the pier staff at the pier and they have confirmed it.
The EI mayor is all over this on and in full support as is MANY MANY of us from the fishing community.:) :D :)

Sorry to be ignorant, but I can't enlighten you.. Sounds as though you know what's going on there as well as I.. All I know is that it is one of senator "B's" pet projects and it will get undivided attention, and that's a good thing... ;)

i do have inside info on the pier, from what im hearing the pier isnt going anywhere.........but the parking lot is going so they way it was told to me was that you will have to come to the pier , drop off your stuff, go park somewhere else and take a shuttle back to the pier because there will not be any parking, its one of those you scratch my back ill take your beach things. nobody knows for sure whats going to happen, we will just have to wait and see, but what ever does we are in for a big change. the town wants mike to stay for 1 year and train someone to run the pier and then they can take it over . i dont think it will work to well with no parking at the pier because there is nowhere to park anywhere else on emerald isle. we got 15 miles of beach and 4 parking lots and 1 of them holds 16 cars down coast gaurd road the one at the islander , the one just before indian beach behind flip flops and the one at the pier which will be gone

I know what you mean about the parking. It sux! I used the parking lot down CG road on memorial wknd and it was never completly full. It's a pretty good haul from there to the inlet so I bought a fish'n mate cart and it worked out pretty good. The pier parking lot was bad though. They have a lot of beach go'ers parking there. Seems to me that if the city could find the room to build a big parking lot, maybe they could offer shuttles to the beach for beach go'ers and leave the pier parking to the pier users. Just my .02.

According to the BIP website there was a workshop in Emerald Isle and the buyers of the BIP have expressed interest in helping the town procure state funds to keep the pier.
