Sounds fairly bad. Cannot say that I really
feel bad for him since he chose to ignore
safety precautions and good advice from
a ton of folks.

I just don't get it. He saw what Happended
to K. Winslow Jr. (could not have happened
to a better jerk btw...;) and also saw what
happended to J. Williams from Duke... he has
his whole life ahead of him full of fame and
fortune and he continues to ride a bike
without a helmet. I do not care how
careful you are, all it takes is one bonehead
in his car to not pay attention.
PLUS if he cannot play, he does not get
paid...

It doesn't even have to be a car. Meet a guy who ran over a spark plug on a slight curve and about lost his leg.
If you choose not to wear a helmet and crash; it could be your last choice you make in life.

I completely agree, what kind of numbskull wears a helmet to protect his head from 300# lineman and doesn't wear one to protect his head from a 2000# vehicle

I ride (sometimes with a helmet sometimes without) and in my opinion the exact same thing could happen to any one of us just driving in a car. What if a 18 wheeler blew a stop sign? Is your seat belt and air bag gonna save you?
Bottom line is that when you get on a bike or get in a car you are taking a chance. There are just too many idiots out there on the roads.
Helmet or not he still screwed up his knees which is gonna be worse for his career than his facial/head lacerations.
Might as well have a good time while you can if he loves riding then good for him. Why just sit around in isolation counting your millions. RIDE ON BEN.

My prayers are with Ben and I hope he recovers completetly. Maybe after this incident he can spend his free time being and advocate for vehicle safety.
That said I still believe its your right to wear a helmet or not and I am not in favor of legislation that infringes too much on our personal rights. I also believe that not wearing a helmet while motorcycling is STUPID. There is a balance in there somewhere I guess.
I know there are nfl contracts that limit or prohibit an athelete from motor cycling, sky diving etc ... I bet now there will be ones requiring helmets, seatbelts, PFD's when on a boat etc.

Hey ya'll! The am news reports are that they had Big Ben in surgery for 7 hours, mainly on his face. His brain, chest, spine and abdomen are all ok. THey haven't said anything about his knees but he is in serious but stable condition.
The reports are also saying that Ben was very adament about not wearing a helmet, except when Cower forbade it during the playoffs last year. :)
Thought I'd give ya an update on this. In my opinion, the repealed the helmet law 3 years ago, but in all honesty, you can't put a law on common sense. Some people just don't have it.
Take care!

No offense but this post is crazy. Don't wear
a seatbelt in a car or a helmet on a bike
because an 18 wheeler may just kill you
anway's so why bother.... What kind of
logic is that? How many lives do seatbelts
and helmet save a year? I know that my
car was hit and totaled and I walked away
without a scratch...thanks to my seatbelt.
Without it I would have been thown through
my windshield. Who is saying stay home
and do nothing? You say there are too many
idiots on the road...I agree, that is exactly
why you should wear all the safety gear
you can. There will not be any millions
to count if an 17 year old teenager cuts him
off and his career is over. The whole
car vs bike thing does not fly. If he had
been in a car he would have walked away
without a scratch...

I agree with you. BuckNasty I hope you never have to go ER and be told your son or daughter is lucky to be alive; why cause they were wearing their seatbelt. I was there last Ded. 11, 2005, now I wish the wife and I had bought a more saver car for our son. He was driving a Toyota Corrola then and now he drives a Volvo 850.
If you don't want to wear a helmetor seat belt just make sure everybody who loves/cares for you is dead already.

I think what BuckNasty point was kinda like this..
"A guy was told by that he's going to die in a airplane crash, so he canceled his ticket and stay home. And the airplane crashed on his house and killed him."
But back to T's point. You can only control what you can control as precaution, wearing seatbelts are some of those things you can control.
Just like fishing, your gears are the only thing you can control when fight a big fish.

SAYING YA GOTTA DIE SOMETIME. JUST PLAIN STUPIDITY PERIOD! WHY RUSH IT?! LIKE SMOKING YOU KNOW IT INCREASES CHANCES OF CANCER BUT CONTINUE TO POISON ONESELF. JUST NOT WISE AT ALL. TAKING A CHANCE ON SOMETHING TRIVIAL IS ONE THING, BUT PLAYING WITH YOUR LIFE MAKES NO SENSE. IF I GET HIT IN A CAR AT LEAST I HAVE A CHANCE AND SOME PROTECTION. ON A BIKE YOU HAVE A HELMET GLOVES AND THE ROAD WITH PLENTY OF EXTRA ROAD IN CASE U MISS A SPOT:eek: TO GET SPLATTERED ON. :( I JUST HOPE HE GETS BETTER AND LEARNS TO WEAR THAT HELMET FROM NOW ON.;)

You all have taken what I said the wrong way. I am not saying that you should not wear a helmet OR a seat belt. What I meant was no matter what you do if you drive anything on a public road you ARE taking a chance. You all read what I said and thought I am condoning "unsafe driving." I have rolled a pick up while wearing my seatbelt and it did most definitely save my life and I wear it every time I get in the car. The part about getting hit by a semi was only my example of the extreme possibility. I ride my Harley more than most guys who own a bike, riding about 17,000 miles a year and I wear a helmet if I'm getting on the highway but if I'm going 5 blocks to the store and will never exceed 35 mph I don't wear it. The problem with this post was that if I didn't write a 3 page letter to clarify every point I'm trying to make then someone can take it wrong. And Tilapia no offense taken by the way. Everyone has an opinion I was just trying to give mine. I'm glad Ben did not get hurt worse than he did but it IS his choice and I'm glad to she he is passionate about something motorcycle riding just happens to be a dangerous passion.

Me, before I even start the engine, I and any passenger has seat belts on. Now, what I really find intriqueing is that, the Steelers are now in limbo at quarterback, and Baltimore, for the very first time since the return to the city have a bonafide quarterback. May only have him for three years or so, but will be a good mentor to a young and learning quarterback (not saying Boller, but Mcnair should be able to "learn" him a thing or two).
Now, I only have to wait and see if we have an offense this season.

SLAMMED  , JK, guess I am just in a mood today, and at least wanted to make ya look like we slam ya!
Figure ol' Ben will be ready for the season, but still think he was an idiot. No helmet, apparently no motorcycle license, expired learners permit, to many bad indescretions on his part if you ask me.

Lovin the banter...a real fun read! I can see this both ways. It is a state law that you don't need to wear a helmet...our government passed it! He's not breaking any laws. It's completely up to him.
But with that said, he holds a high profile position...he's a superbowl winning QB, and he should understand that even though law does not require him to wear a helmet, there are alot of people who rely on him. And though he has a passion for riding helmet free, he also has a responsibility to his team and his fans. QB's retire rather young...hold off until your done, retired and rich. My two cents.

Well, it appears old Ben was breaking the law.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060619/ap_on_sp_fo_ne/fbn_steelers_roethlisberger_accident_2
Since he was riding his bike without a license, obviously, since he was cited for riding a bike without a helmet, and ONLY licensed riders are allowed this "luxury", not only was he pretty stupid, he was also wrong.
Have Jeep will travel :D
Now, being a somewhat hero up there, figure nothing will happen, no fine, maybe court costs, but most likely a small lecture from the judge, don't do it again, get yourself a bike license, and get us another Super Bowl championship, case dismissed.

Here's what our local news posted on their website.
Big Ben To Be Cited
Pittsburgh police said they will issue numerous citations one week after Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's motorcycle accident.
Roethlisberger will be cited for failure to drive in class with no proper permit or license, which carries a fine of $281.50.
He will also be cited for failure to wear a helmet, which was required by law since he did not have a license, and pay an additional $106.50 fine.
Police determined that though both drivers had a green light, the 62-year-old female driver will be cited for failure to yield to oncoming traffic.
Investigators found no mechanical issues with either vehicle, and also determined that Roethlisberger was traveling at 35 miles per hour, which is the posted speed limit.
Investigating Officer Dan Connelly said Roethlisberger was very fortunate to have survived his collision with the car.
The statement Ben released says that if he rides again he'll wear a helmet and that he never believed that an accident would happen to him.
Guess that belief is gone. I have heard that he'll be good to go either for the pre-season or the opener. Hopefully he'll be back to normal and we'll have another great season and grind Baltimore into the ground like they should be. Haha, take that Shaggy! :D
Take care ya'll!

AH, but the judge may just ignore the fines, and give him the pep talk.
Hope he is good for the season opener, if you gonna win win against all the guns.
Don't ruin my buzz in June, for the first time I feel like we may, might, dream, have a quarterback that can help us compete!

By some miracle, we haven't seen or heard from Ben since he left the hospital and I'm sure that when we do, it'll be a little 30 second report ont he news. Guess we'll wait til the opener. I have seen a picture where someone photo-shopped a pic of the guy Chunk from the Goonies and imposed it on Ben's body. Guessing that's what ben looks like since his accident.
Sorry to spoil your buzz over the ravens, but someone had to bring you back down to earth...lol :D Next time Shaggy, I'll bring a pillow for you to land on.
Take care!
