Hey all,
Recently i purchased a house in the miami area, and have also recently gotten into surf fishing. I have a 10 foot Ugly Stick rod with a big shimano bait runner reel. My question is, it is easy to catch sharks of the surf, and if so, how do you catch them? I have tried to catch sharks several times but just end up getting some small blue fish.

Thanks in advance,
Blake

fishing within the 1st and 2nd trough tends to be hit and miss with best chances within the high tide (both outgoing and incoming). If you're catching blues it is a good sign. Many times those schools are being shadowed by some nice sized sharks (see that from my kayak often). The best way to sort out the blues and try to land the sharks is get a hold of a kayak (buy or borrow) and yak your line out past the last sandbar where the water color goes from that brown disturbed to the nice aqua (depth is usually 21-25'). The blues are rarer here due to the deep water with so many sharks. The sandbar ends differently for every beach. I fish around the Cape and Cocoa and it tends to end ~250-350 yds from shore.
Basically perserve on the sharks. Some times they can be the easiest fish to catch and other times they will stubbornly refuse every bait thrown at them regardless.
