I had originally planned a trip to CHSP surf for some croakers, sea mullet, and blues (just 1 blue). We'll, the beach was packed with no room for anything, so I decided to take a walk to see what they were doing to the front of the pier before heading to my 2nd option (IRI).
The best fishing area of CHSP is closed indefinately. Evidently they found structural problems (pilings are eroding) and decided to close the narrow portion all the way to the front. So, this means it'll be a zoo.
Anyway, got to IRI at around noon and proceeded to catch 5 croakers in an hour (a good omen). The croaker bite turned off after an hour and the blue bite turned on. I saw boaters and this elder gent nailed them consistently (not a blitz) but nailing them nonetheless. The avg size is around 18'' and fat.
I tried everthing in my arsenal but no dice. Finally, my brain told me that the elder gent who's having success is using a bucktail with a yellow worm (I used white). I decided to change to yellow (only 1 left) and on my 3rd cast, bam!!!! That sucker fought like Ali. I didn't think I could bring it in, but I had to sling it over the rail because it was so heavy and fighting mad. I measured at 18''.
At 6:00pm, the blue bite died and so did the crowd. So, I decided to go for the croaker again. On my 1st cast, the rig barely reached the bottom and the game is on. After several more, the crowd started to thicken as I was pulling doubles. From 6:00-8:00pm, I CRUSHED them!!!! I started to keep only 13'' and larger and I think I have over 20 in the cooler and released a bunch (between 10''-12'', really decent size).
When the croaker bite died, someone started to land some nice blues. At this point, I was too tired, so I packed it in.
Also, I saw about 4 nice sized flounder caught.
Anyway, it's pretty amazing the 2 weeks ago when I was there, I didn't catch jack and with all of the extreme heat, all of these fishes came out in force is a surprise to me.
Anyway, an awesome day for me...
