View Full Version : 2 thumbs down...Greg's Baitshack

I was very disappointed for a few reasons.

I pm'ed Greg about a week before the wheels reels tourney asking about bait. I told him I needed about 100lbs and we came to an agreement on price ($25/(flat,~50lbs)because I could have gone somewhere else a little out of the way, but the bait would have been fresh and cheap.

I've pm'ed him in the days before I planned on heading down, and on the day before (wednesday, nov 28) I actually called him onthe phone to check on the bait situation and he said he had 100lbs on ice, I said "cool" and that I would be there sometime around 11-12noon.

When I get there, there was definitely not 100lbs, but that's ok, i tell greg i'll take the rest....he says he can't sell me the rest coz other people are coming....he says he can give me about 30-40 lbs worth. I'm like, ok. I get about 30lbs and then he charges me around $40. I know that about the going rate and all...but my point is...we had what I believed was a deal on the bait. Not only did I get stiffed on the price of the bait, but the amount I could buy...being he knew ahead of time I was looking to buy 100lbs.

Greg...I've been pm'ing for the last week and called you less than 24 hrs before I was going to pick up....so I am very disappointed in the service you have given me....and apparently your word doesn't mean anything...at least in my experience.

and the kicker....i ask him about the line he had a web special on 17sufix-tri...for $34.99...he quoted me the original price...as if he couldn't sell me for the web price (just my feeling though, on the way he said it)

It wouldn't have been as bad if I just showed up, but I've pm'ed and called Greg to let him know what I needed and when I needed it.

Bad experience overall!!! Last time for me!!

sorry to hear about that.

On a side note I'm curious as to how many anglers you were buying bait for. I buy when I get there and only buy enough for a couple of tides at one time. On rare occasions I may buy more, (bait hard to find) but most shops are aware that atourny is going on and are getting fresh batches daily.

100 lbs is a lot of bait, again just curious, cause me and a buddy didn't go thru more than 25 lbs for the whole tournament- and it was good buying it fresh daily.

Maybe we would have gone thru more if we had been into the critters, other than small blues and one puppy drum are bait wasn't getting much attention.

i was buying for 6 anglers fishing about 3 days. If and when Greg chimes in, he and I know what we said in pm's and on the phone the day before. On the sufix line, again, like I said, just my feeling on the context of how he said it.

Fred, were you trying to buy one spool? The special was for two 1# spools.

hey, clay...i might have...but just going on my feeling....it felt as if he was setting aside for web orders only...like i said...just a feeling...he said it's a web special...and not further saying he can give it to me for that price, whether one spool or two...so i left it alone. i mean...he could have expanded and said, if you buy two, i'll give you the web-special price.

it just added to an overall bad experience.

Guys,
1st of all I'm very sorry to Fish on, I had so many of you come buy that morning I was not trying to upset anyone. I did not realize that you were fish on when you were in my store, and never did you mention our agreement when you were in there. I sure wish that you would have said something to me and I would given the agreed price 50lb at 25.00. I'm willing to send you the difference I charged you, just pm me your address.
Please understand when you ask for it all, I was still calculting in my head I owed someone 50lb flat and did not realize you were one in the same.

Just trying to make all happy that morning untill more bunker arrived.

Thanks to everyone who came buy, there were 3 Tournaments local this weeked and I tried my best to serve them all.

Sorry again,

Greg

Hi Greg,

I did believe, I mentioned I was fish-on at some point and that I called you the previous afternoon, and when you were ringing me up, I mentioned we had a deal...and you brought up gas prices and such.

Anyways, if you were unaware then it's ok...i accept your apology.

don't worry about the money...maybe one day...you'll give me a deal on something else.

Sounds like it was just a misunderstanding during some hectic times, but Greg couldn't have handled it better.

Greg, I live on the OBX and will probably never be up your way, but should the opportunity ever arise, I'd be honored to do business with you. Hope the shop does well.

Much about running a bait shop but selling fresh bunker for 50 cent a pound when it is hard to get is a quick road to being out of business. 1.50 a pound at least. The more you give the more people want. Just the fact you had it would make me happy.

I just bought a reel from him today and everything went according to plan. No hiccups and great service. Reel was ready and waiting when I showed up. So far, 2 thumbs up in my book.

surf rat....like i said in the first paragraph of my initial post...i could have gotten it cheaper but it would have been a little bit out of my way (but i would have drove it)...i called greg because he was advertising fresh bait...and asked what he could do for me and we struck a deal. if he decided that the best he could do was anywhere between 50 cent to $1.50 per lb i probably would have gone with that also...i told him what i could get it for and he gave me his best price.

philly jack...i'm actually kinda confused with your post...not sure if you're referring to me (SF) and if you're saying i'm not "allowed" to buy bait for me and my friends. i'm not really sure what you are saying and if you are kinda on my side or not. either way the issue has been resolved.

Whatever...sounds like there was a bunch of confusion there...I visit Gregs biweekly and will continue. There are alot of shops around here but few offer good service. Try Oceans east and let us know how you feel when you leave there!! See ya soon Greg im aiming for that HDX

philly jack...ok, it's more clear what you were trying to say...yeah, i was pretty po'd leaving the joint not to mention my friends weren't helping much by fueling my fire...lol...but it was a misunderstanding and i've come to accept that.

i guess lessons learned for everyone...good luck to greg in his new business.

Does this need to be posted as a "sticky"?

People have seen it; satisfied their curiosity.

Future interested parties can do a search.

Why not a regular post and just let it drift away. . . ;)

Guys working @ a bait and tackle shop, bait a week out is not a call able thing its a day to day thing.. IMHO Greg did his best.. And probubly learned a valuable lesson.. Bait is a first come first served basis.. To save or put away bait for someone, starts out as one person and can easily become 50 people.. Then you are doing nothing but hoarding bait for folks.. Frist come First Served ... JAM RDT

Jam....

first of all, Greg and I had an agreement, so that really supercedes any scenario you throw out there.

I know how bait situation can go...that's why, i've pm'ed him several times and called him the day before to see if he would have bait available. Wednesday afternoon I called and he said he had 100lbs iced and ready and I said I should be at his shop between 11am-12noon the next day.

If he couldn't accommodate me, he could have said so. If he had said first come first serve, I would have said ok. I had a second option as to acquiring fresh bait, so I would have gone there if Greg couldn't accommodate me.

Hoarding bait...as I said, I was buying for six people fishing for about 3days...that's hardly hoarding. I'm sure if I bought every rod and/or reel in your shop, you wouldn't call that hoarding...you'd call it a great day. If someone is knowingly buying all the bait to keep it from other or all people, I would call that hoarding. I was buying bait to satisfy the needs of me and my friends...not to keep it from anyone.

I think what JAM is saying here is that bait is probably best handled on a first come first serve basis. It's probably the fairest thing for both the business and the angler.

I don't believe he was specifically pointing you out.

should of offered to pay for it in advance, i work in a tackle/boating store and i run out of ballyhoo and cigar minnows in the spring and cant promise anything unless you pay in advance:fishing::beer::beer:

I would say the paying in advance is a good idea ... that way you get your bait and the shop don't get left holding bait for someone who buys it somewhere else ......

Myself Greg would have know for sure I was the guy calling ... in a nice way ......

I've made so many mistakes in my life it's funny and sure everyone else has too ......

As long as it was a honest mistake and Greg did whatever it took to try and correct it and Fish-on was satisified with the end result ... It's just one of those bumps in the road life throws at us ... deal with it and go on ...

Haven't bought from Greg but did Randy and if Greg has what I want or can get it at the right price he will get my business ...

He's a sponser and I will support him as he supports us

You know what fishinmama, you are absolutely correct. No mater what shop owners do there are customers who just can't be pleased and can't get over it when they think they've bee wronged.

Greg, good luck. The way you've handled this situation here should go along way in making your business a success.

I'm sure any bait shop would be pissed if I was the first one in the door on a Saturday morning and I purchased their entire bait supply.

That logic doesn't add up. They are a business trying to make money. Selling all of their bait in one fell swoop would be good for the business, but bad for everyone else. I've seen it happen when bait is scarce down south. Some guy cleaned out F&F's about 30 minutes after they got some mullet in. I got there 10 minutes later and was SOL.

i agree also, as former retailer, there are many times when a customer will order many merchandise, then not show up.

Done job.
Now, if the shop was closer to Richmond, I'd be poking my nose in on a regular basis. Green Top doesn't have too much heaver type gear.
Good luck

My opinion about this thread!

Lock it and let it die! its been settled.

Start a new thread if everyone wants to talk about bait shop ethics!!!
