Decided to fish the inlet Saturday June 10th to break in the All Star 1265 rod I just finished building. Matched it up a 6500 Nautil I picked up on ebay for $30. New 30 lb test Fireline rounded up the setup.
Arrived at the inlet while still dark. I saw two guys weighing their fish (I was told it was 39" while I was still getting ready at the car so I knew the fish were there. They had caught theirs from the surf though. I got my gear ready and headed down to the jetty. I did not wear my cleats as the wind was strong and I was not going to fish the inlet tip. I found a dry rock and started fishing. The new setup allowed me to really cast it into the current and work the large plug I had chosen. This plug had been in my arsenal for years without ever producing for me. I was halfway through my retrieve, when he hit - and hit hard! He took line for 15 minutes and decided to head out towards the ocean. The only thing I could do was to hang on and hope the 30 lb test Fireline (and 4' of 50 lb test leader) held out. At this point, I was worried about him spooling me at the rate the line was ripping off the reel. After awhile I was able to start taking in some line only to lose it again and he made another run. He made three runs besided the initial one. THe hard part of landing him was climbing down the slippery rocks without the Korkers and find an opening to steer him in to. When I initially shined the light on him as I was guiding him into the location I had picked, he looked small - around 24". I did not realize how big he was until I slid my hand under his gil plate and tried to lift him out of the water. Talk about dead weight! The fight lasted 45 minutes.
The fish weighed in at 27 lbs was 40" long and had a girth of 24".
